Hi all. I'm soon to be owner of my first VW! Getting a Candy White Tig!

Been reading this forum for a while, and it's getting me excited to get my wheels changed. But I am having some trouble understanding how to get the offset numbers.

What about wheel spacers? They look like 'brake discs' to me. Do they do similar things to offsets? I understand they are used more for wide body kits - which I'm am keen in getting.

Between a 19" and a 20" wheel... I'm not sure which to go for. Don't really want to sacrifice too much ride comfort. but a 19" looks too small for a wife body kit. ;p what do u guys think....

Where do u get ur H&R springs from? The States?

Hi Mate.
Spacers are technically an illegal modification in Australia so i would be steering clear of them if you can.
Best bet is to try and find a nice wide wheel in an offset that suits.

There are tonnes of wheels available on tirerack (US) and they have competitive shipping costs.
Most of the widths are 8", 8.5" or 10" on there for the tiguan in the sizing you are after.

How do measure what offset I need? I assume I have to first start w findin out how thick the wheel arch extensions are first - that is, IF I do get the wide body kit? Then from here... What do I do to be sure the wheels will sit flushed? I assume ET35 means 35mm offset? But not exactly what that means. Might have to do some reading on this if I can find the time. So much to do.. So little time.

tirerack have a lot of information on this sort of thing.

ET35 is an offset of +35mm

The offset is basically the distance between the centreline of the wheel (width / 2) and the mounting face (where the bolts go in)
Generally the smaller the offset the further out from the brakes the wheel will sit.

I run 19 x 8 ET 35 and it is flush with the body work on the stock car.

I am just wondering you feel about your 20's? Really nice! I'm asking more in terms of ride comfort and how much did you lower your car by? What's the width of the 20's? I'm really considering whether I should get 20's or 19's..... decisions... decisions...

Guess the best way to find out is to try them out once the Tig finally gets into the country - It's crazy to think I'll be waiting longer for a Tig than an R! I thought 4.5months was difficult!!

Does anyone else have an opinion?

I run 20x8.5 ET35 and you wouldn't want to go much wider or lower offset than this, they're right on the limit of being legal. If you intend to lower the car you need to take that into account too. Mine is lowered on H&R springs and when I have a very heavy load in the back (300kg+) it will just scrub on heavy bumps. Only very lightly mind you but you wouldn't want to go any lower in that width and offset.

I'm also thinking of getting wheel arch extensions too. Therefore the 9" width would be more flushed.

Do you (or anyone else) think that would be as issue w H&R lowering springs? Would you (or anyone else) recommend the new ST coilovers by KW advertised by ECS Tuning selling at US$799.95 worth looking at w the 20's?

Haywire, i have a set of 19"x8.5" ET35 VMR wheels on my Tig. You're welcome to check 'em out anytime! No issues... apart from worrying about damaging them on a kerb or something... I'm Melbourne eastern sub's.

20x9 ET35 will be fine for width, just legal I'd say. However if you lower it you may have some minor scrubbing with a full car load, probably not annoyingly bad though. Coilovers are a good option as they have height adjustability.

Nah no trouble at all with the popos. Advantage of an SUV they don't even look twice at them lol. I've heard good things about H&R and KW coilovers comfort wise, but more comfortable than stock I doubt it, they'll definitely be firmer but will improve your handling a great deal.

That's exactly what I want! A firmer ride but not like a rock. Makes sense that SUV's aren't the most popular targets of the 5-0's!!

Some friends have told me coilovers are much firmer than lowering springs. Some others told me the other way around especially H&R springs being overly uncomfortable in the Q5's and Q7's. I'm unsure why such opposite reviews. It's confusing me. But I'm swaying towards coilovers due to height adjustability that you mentioned. Do they make the vehicle un-road worthy?
