Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

On order are TTE475 hybrid turbo (due to be completed manufacture shortly). I'll also be placing an order for an intercooler shortly (likely Wagner) and will also be getting a DP, turbo inlet elbow and turbo muffler delete. After that it'll be on the dyno for tuning. So the discussion is more about the preparation and all the exciting bits are yet to come...
What are the plans for a dp and exhaust? (I assume this is necessary given the turbo and other mods)

DP will likely be RD Technik Mk7 R or equivalent. Exhaust will probably come later - it's actually not necessary for tuning as cat-back section is only for noise (DSG farts and over-run crackles).

I am looking to source a stock Mk7 R exhaust and looking to modify this to suit. There's a couple around but looking to pick one up at the right price when it comes along. I'm in no real hurry on this as I've got plenty of other things to spend $ on and getting the cosmetic stuff will happen later.

This car needs a bit more noise more than anything else I feel. I can't even hear any dsg farts stock.

Agreed. I’ll see how the sound goes with DP, turbo and intake installed and go from there.

Would love to see a step by step write up of how you eventually install the mk7 R exhaust on your Tiguan! That’s def a project on the cards for me too.

I’ll just be taking the stock Mk7 exhaust to an exhaust shop and getting them to modify it to fit.

I’ll look to get some photos and a description of what changes had to be made to get it to fit.

              • Ran some timed 0-100’s this morning.

Was quite surprised with the results:

So that’s 0.4sec off the stock 0-100 time just from an intake!

Morning, that’s a massive performance increase with just an intake upgrade!
We’re all the conditions and settings the same as your original run without the intake?

Had you verified stock times are 6.5 with that same gps device beforehand though? If so, good result without a tune

I can’t remember exactly what temps the stock run was done at but it certainly wasn’t a hot day. This morning was about 22 deg C so would have been max 10 deg C between the 2 - probably less.

Yes. Stock run was using same device and ran both directions on same road to check/verify.

I was surprised at the difference. Most times intake just makes noise and no measurable performance gains but this is massive. I was kind of expecting 0.1s max but 0.4s is a significant gain.

I suspect the snow grate delete on the stock intake would give a little more at top end too.

Plus intake upgrade keeps warranty intact [emoji6]

                        • And for those who just want to remove the snow grate, I just did it. Took less than 5 minutes, lifted straight out, and didn't even get my hands dirty. I have no way of knowing if that made any difference, but I figured it couldn't hurt

From my testing I think you may get a modest increase. If you also installed a high flow panel filter you’d probably be able to get a measurable difference.

I think the filter element plays a decent part as well as the more direct flow path with the Racingline intake.

Confirming a moderate increase. Snow grate removal was tested and there was a 3% increase in CFM:

Mk7 GTI Stock Airbox Snow Guard Modification

With a panel filter (AFE in this example) and snow grate removal, there was 5% better flow:

Mk7 GTI panel filter and snow guard modification

Turbo Inlet Pipe (TIP) shows some distinct gains over stock (note APR intake did not provide significant flow increase compared to the panel filter and snow grate removal):

TIP comparison - APR vs panel

APR intake and APR inlet pipe

Turbo Inlet pipe shoot out, Burger Motor Sport and MST with elbow take the lead:

                              Inlet pipe testing

The elbow gives a boost also....

All these also increase intake noise alot.. DV+ also gives nice turbo noises when coming off the throttle.

If you really want a loud intake, disconnect the airbox and just have the turbo inletpipe, did this to see how it sounded when installing my intake parts...
