Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Ok the experiment is complete. A 2kg reduction in wheel weight results in approx. 0.1s improvement in 0-100.

Totally unscientific but it is repeatable and justifies completely the investment in lighter wheels.

Tyre pressures 38PSI all around. Ambient temp 23degC. Clear day and run at 10m above sea level (give or take a couple of metres). Actually run on same toad as previous run and one pass in either direction within 0.01s so we’ll call it a good result.

I noticed that Tristan had one in his build and so asked my tuner about it. His response was that it was definitely advisable. Not because they run out of peak flow as such necessarily but stock can't built it fast enough so yes upgrade is recommended (but not essential).

So I've added it to the list... which is growing longer rather than shorter at the moment hence why wheels are for sale

Hey thanks Tigger. That’s a great result! 0.1s is nothing to sneeze at......good to know what 2kg per corner can do on improving times. My mate has a set of light rims, I might give it a go.....

In terms of tyre pressure the VW specs say 230 KPA / 33 PSI, I know the scorpions have a max tyre pressure of 50 PSI under load. Do you think running 38 PSI has increased your traction and improved performance?

Have you thought about the ignition side, with perhaps colder plugs ? With the air/fuel/timing changes and running more aggressively, you might need some plugs that can cope....

If I strip out the car and get some lighter wheels I might be able to scrape in there. Not that desperate, and no offence but I prefer the look of the Suzukas...

My friend has a set of light/racing wheels under 10kg per rim, for some giggles I might put them on and do a run !

              • For the sake of science (if you get time) are you able to do a run at 230 KPA per tyre and see whether there is any improvement ?

Yeah I was a little surprised it was so much to be honest. By the time you add a tyre on there it'll be the difference between ~26 and 28kg. So in percentage terms it'll be 7-8% and not all of that weight will necessarily be at the outer rim either.

If anything higher pressures will reduce traction/increase wheelspin/reduce rolling resistance. I'm not sure it makes that much difference to be honest. Given that it's 37 degrees in Adelaide today that test will have to wait for another (cooler) day. I'm not getting traction issues off the line and if anything a higher pressure will help with performance once off the line.

It was only said in jest, however it would be interesting to put some lightweight wheels on your car, strip out any unnecessary weight (spare/tools) and re-run the times. I know when you get down into the lower numbers it gets increasingly difficult to make a big difference in the time without fairly sizeable increases in output and traction.

We'll see how we go... though I suspect the difference will be in the 100th's and not something that you'd be able to reliably measure.

Lol - I know you were kidding...

Got a child seat and a bucket of kids toys in the back seat, prob an extra 10kg there...

I think anything that improves traction will be shaving tune off...I’ll try lighter rims and better rubber on a cooler day and report back....

I think rule of thumb measurement is good enough for our purposes....doesn’t need to be an exact science at this stage.

Yes weight reduction and traction are the keys.

I know I’m chirping the tyres at stock power levels so once tuned I can tell traction is going to play a big part. Hence need for some wider street performance tyres all round.
