At the recent happy laps I decided I really liked the darker tail lights on the white R's that were there. I can buy the R style tail lights, but have been put off by the $700USD price (+ shipping) for what is exactly the same housing, but in a darker tint. So I've done some research and a mob called Lamin-x make pre-cut tinting sheets that should give me the exact look I'm after. Note that I am very keen to avoid the ricer look. I'm going to ask Lamin-x if knife tape can be used to cut their sheeting so that the indicator section can be removed (The thin clear strip is un-tinted on both the GTI and R LED tails). It'll be fiddly, but will give a look as close as physically possible to the Golf R lights as possible without replacement.

Anyone used this stuff before? Thoughts on what I'd like to do?

    Cheers,

    - Matt
    Hey Matt,

That sounds like an awesome idea!! Unfortunately I am not help but I have been wondering about the tinted rear lights on the R compared to my GTI performance :/

I'm not sure which Lamin-x product to try though:

To me the tint on the R lights is actually in between the two Lamin-x tints offered above (they go darker but it's far too dark). The problem is at $54USD (+shipping) per set for something I may rip off straight away, I don't want to order both. I might play it safe and get the lighter tint. A Lamin-x rep also confirmed knfie tape works (so I can keep the indicator strip clear and un-tinted) but that the cut needs to be started with a knife - the tape will finish the job but just doesn't seem capable of starting the cut.

I found this. I really like it because I have my liner lowered all the time and my boot is often filled with dirty football gear and Bunnings treasures.

This mob (who happen to be in Brisbane) supposedly ordered one in for me. Good thing I never paid a deposit because they never called me back to say it had arrived. That said I still want one so might chase it up again next week.

              • My 2012 Ford Focus has succumbed to the well publicised problem of the dodgy DSG transmission. It is booked in to have the clutch assy and seals replaced next week.

A few months ago I took a VW GTI DSG for a test drive. Loved it. After some extensive reading my understanding is that VW has also had issues with its DSG transmissions. I know a recall was conducted in 2013 to sort out the issues. Are there still any issues with the latest GTI? Any help would be appreciated. Once the transmission on my Focus is fixed, the car is going to be sold privately to help fund my new GTI!! Thanks in advance.

You should not have any problem with the GTI DSG as it is the stronger, 6 speed unit also used in the diesel models and the Golf R to handle the extra torque. Whether the extra strength of the units is a factor, I don't know. The problem plagued were the 7 speed units used in the other Golfs and Polos. Even so, not all of them had problems.

If you do a search there are many threads on this, including one that was active recently.

                  • Hi guys,
I was offered Golf GTI manual with sunroof, driver assist pack and Vienna leather in premium colour for 49k drive away.
Which is approximately $4250 off RRP

judging by the prices above (white manual with driver assist and tinting for ~$42K), I should get it for about 46-47K driveaway.
                    What do you think?

Get it but don't get tinting at the dealership it's overpriced

                      • If you can save 4-5k off recommended price then you've done pretty well.

                        • Hi

Asking on behalf of a friend.

They bought some OEM Golf R LED tail lights off a wrecked Golf R. His car is just a base GTi.

With the LED lights be plug and play? Or will they need a conversion lead?

I'm inclined to believe that a lead will be required. But not 100% sure.

They should be plug and play. Quite easy to install Google Deutsche auto parts YouTube video on how to install the lights. Try it ! If they work happy days if not, it may need a cable and or VCD tweak but I am pretty sure it's plug and play!

                            • Coming up to the 1st year service.

                              VW charge $390.

                              Ultratune $320.

Much closer than Polo GTI service costs.

Might just stick with VW for the first 3 years, & then go to Ultratune.....

I wouldnt let Ultratune touch my new car...you are in Melb and there are so many Euro specialist mechanics with good feedback from forum members.
