Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • The one's on the Mark 7 were "Cadiz". My order of preference is Spielberg, then Silver Pret's, Cadiz, then Black Pret's. Must say, though, the black wheels will hold their own for people who can't get to wash their wheels regularly. The silver Pret's will obviously look grubbier more of the time.

How's about some 7.5 R owner reviews/writeups/observations to tie over those of us waiting!

Yeah, sure. It has been quiet. We get our cars, and then just forget you all. Here's some first impressions ...

.. the seating position is nice and low, but it's harder to get in and out of than my little Mazda 2, for sure. And I do notice i scrape that pointy seat bolster poking up every time. Great driving position, though.
.. I'm a bit disappointed I can't separately adjust the exhaust level in individual mode. "Drive" must cover it, along with change points. I agree with the Australian magazine reviews saying the exhaust is too quiet. I've already received my S3 resonator delete kit, and I think I'll try it on earlier than I'd planned.
.. can't get over the twist below 2 thou. Coming from a naturally aspirated 1.5 has obviously helped there, but I don't remember my Wrx being anything like this.
.. the standard sound is just OK at low to medium volumes. I've dropped a few movie files onto an SD card at DVD resolution, along with my music, and it was pretty cool to see them play on that big centre screen.
.. if you're coming from a front driver like me, the steering is also something you'll notice just as much as the loud pedal. I'm genuinely surprised how much less I need to turn the wheel even when cornering normally. Not sure if it's that fast ratio they've dialled in, or the inside brakes being activated, but it really adds to the fun as much as the grunt.
.. these bloody wheels are enormous. Our roads around here fall apart after some good rain, so I'm not looking forward to pothole dodging. Really considering some 18s, and 245 rubber.
.. don't believe the whinging you read about the DSG. A slight pause is all you'll notice between moving the lever and go. Big deal. The thing's great once up and running. This is my first auto, and I'm missing gear changing a lot less than I thought I would. I'm actually using Eco mode often in traffic, and just bumping that lever back to get some revs up if needed.
.. tight motors much use a bit of juice, because I'm not getting anywhere near 8l/100. Not thrashing it either, as I'm still under 1000k.

            • Nice one, kudos!

Can't say I've heard about the DSG pause issue, sounds like a non event if only when engaging DSG lever. Do you get any DSGs pauses when car is running? I find with my MK5 GTI if you change to a gear the DSG was not anticipating can take up to 2 secs to change which ****s me no end (don't recall this being an issue when car was new, maybe an issue with an 11 year old car!).

I presume movies only play on screen when car is stationary?

How quickly does the reverse camera take to engage when putting it into reverse? On my CX9 you often complete your reversing before the camera comes on!

Interested in mods people are planning on their 7.5 R's. Any decent single stage tunes confirmed for this model yet?

              • Mk7 Golf R Price?(now that 7.5 is out)-is sub 50k a chance?

Just wondering what people think a brand new/demo dsg MK7 golf r may be able to be snapped up for over the next six months?
Is sub 50 drive away going to be possible now that the 7.5 is out?

                • Just returned from Germany I have only done 81km on the new R just need to get the front bar and leading edges wrapped don't want any stone chips this time. Got a few pics from Frankfurt IAA R Performance edition also had a drive in HGP Turbo 480PS R 7.5 (353kW 615Nm) 3.2s 0-100kph serious power the engine runs huge 2.1 bar (30 psi) from 3500 rpm chassis feels rock solid even with this power, apart from all the add-ons the motor itself is stock so in factory form 228kW 400Nm the motor certainly is not stressed.

..neither could the VW clutch engineers who didn't bother uprating the clutch on the manual car...

It's a really quick variable rack. Massive improvement over the Mk6 R

Need to use the full manual mode to get the most from the box. Rest of the time just leave it in D

in city traffic you'll do well to get single figures. I did a 200km cross country run today with the wife and 3 kids on board. It was pissing rain so stuck the radar cruise at 90kph in eco mode and got 7 l per 100km

                          • I can't say I've noticed any really slow shifts. But I guess being a long term manual convert, I subconsciously compare any sluggish shift to the alternative of me in a manual possibly being in two minds about shifting anyway, having to take one hand off the wheel, and worse, lifting off the gas. IMHO, even a slow DSG shift is at last as good as a human one. Well, mine at least

I haven't tried movies on the go - I'll get back to you on that one.

My reversing camera almost comes straight on. Maybe just a second or two delay.

Re - mods, I happen to be one of those wowsers who believe that the engineers that make it to the very top of the VAG, and who oversee the failure testing of big batches of engines might know something about how much our motors can reliably produce. Hearing VW Australia arguing the point about about whether we should really be a "hot climate" market makes me want to bring my car up to the European spec. But considering the popular software upgrades without any hardware changes, if VW could eclipse that oh-so-special engine-output marketing gap to the Focus with just some software, wouldn't they do it ?

Let the flames begin. Be gentle. I'm new.

                            • I test drove an MY17 demo with 5000kms in limestone grey, fully optioned listed at 51,500 so sub 50 would be easy on that one. However, the front bar was scraped to f*** underneath and had scratches around the entry point, probably fixable by a detailer. That was located near Newcastle NSW, but they have recently put the price UP for some reason.
