Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Keep in mind, the psi/bar "gauge" is atmospheric pressure, not boost like a mechanical boost gauge. At sea level, atmospheric PSI is 14.5.

    • Here are some photos of the Active Info Display, it really is awesome with the map in there!

I also love the little touches on the upgraded DAP! Now when the engine cuts at the lights it turns back on when the car in front takes off.
On my MK7 GTI, it stays off until you release the break peddle.

      • The active info display is great. The radar at the front picks up the movement of the car in front to start the engine again and it's a good idea...unless you have one of those annoying creepers in front - the ones that just let their car inch forward every so often at red lights for no reason at all.

          • I am a big fan of black VW emblems front and rear. Had them on my Mk6 "R"
My MY18 Mk 7.5 "R" arrives in January.
Does anyone know if the Mk7 emblems fit (are the same) as the Mk7.5 ones.
Suppliers dont have Mk 7.5 specifically listed.

            Cheers

            • Not 100% certain but I do know the DAP sensors are behind the emblem on the bonnet in the 7.5 so that might change things.

I think you are correct. You just cant pull the front VW emblem off to say plasti dip it on the 7.5 like you could on a 7.

                • Just a bit of info on R 7.5 DSG 7 speed fuel consumption has improved, I'm averaging 6.3 L/100 against 6.9L/100 on a 140km town plus extra urban freeway run I've taken previously so there's definitely an improvement there 0.5L/100, I imagine high 5s would be achievable if you kept to 100kph on longer runs bit difficult though. Yes the auto-start senses movement of the car in front pretty handy. The lane tracking works well to, keeps the car within the lane and with hands off will give a visual then audible warning. Led headlights powerful track the road and I suspect they even sense an oncoming car and auto-dip the right hand side of the road. Amazing what a package this R is with all the tech, versatility and performance. One other thing the 7 speed DSG sports mode is very good equivalent to a tuned 6 speed DSG.

                  • Yep - my fuel use had improved since my last post also. Maybe the sheer novelty my right foot has been enjoying has worn off a little, but easy 7s are on my screen now.
Side issue - has anyone turned off their auto-stop-start and now can't turn it back on ? And what minimum speed should I be feeling the tug of the wheel in lane-keep mode ? I'm yet to feel it.

It only operates over 60 kph. You should see the lines turn green. I have definitely felt it, feels odd. I think I would prefer a beep or something like my previous car.

                      • Anyone's 7.5 R have any rattling at about 2k revs when you take off from standstill slowly?
I have been noticing a rattling in the cabin at about 2k revs when I don't push it off the lights. If I depress the accelerator harder from standstill then I don't hear it.
Not sure if it is normal in the R or not as I never really heard it in my GTI. Might just be the extra power causing it.

                        Cheers

                        • The only rattle I've noticed so far is a hard to notice one from RHS of the dash when driving on very coarse aggregate bitumen. It is hard to notice because the loud road roar from the tyres on those surfaces almost drowns it out. My car is very nice, quiet and smooth on good condition hot mix, unfortunately not all Oz roads meet that high standard

                          • I have mentioned it to dealership.
My car was booked in last week to have the loose bolts looked at on my side skirts.
Also asking them to enable traffic. Not sure if that will be a go as they are saying not available for Aus but some people have been lucky and had it enabled. BS.

Also, there is a shiny new white R sitting in the pick up bay, someone will be happy with a new 7.5R today!!

                            • Well they couldn't fix the loose bolts....
Said they took photos and sent to VW and awaiting instructions.

                              Doesn't sound good.

                              • 2 small but significant changes to my R today.

                                Soundaktor volume = 0%
                                Start/Stop voltage = 12

I'm not yet so deaf that I need amplified fake engine noise to tell the ears when the motor is under load.
And I'm done with Fred Astaire's soft shoe driving style to avoid the Stop/Start irritant.

Now driving is becoming very pleasurable. As it should be.
