    2017 Volkswagen Golf R 7.5 review | MOTOR

One of the negative comments relates to those enormous wheels wheels we'll be testing with our potholed roads. Anyone with a Mk7 had problems with their 19s ? And is anyone considering going back to 18's, after more than one review has the R hitting it's bump stops on more than one occasion during the review ?
I have not had the slightest issue in my 7.5. I am sure it can happen and I am used to it from my previous car. Would not consider going to 18s. That article has errors as well, the brakes haven't been changed and the wheels are 8 inch, not 7.5.

    • I'm with revster. I'm a big fan of the 19s. They look great (in my view) and performance is incredible. Want a bit more comfort, the suspension comfort setting makes it velvet smooth. Want to tear strips in the bitumen while cornering... then you can do that too. I wouldn't change the 19s for anything smaller diameter as it just isn't necessary. As for hitting bump stops? Nah, never had this. And that includes "spirited" runs on highly questionable surfaced country back roads. They just grip forever while providing a ride that can be anything from magic carpet to rocket sled. What more could you want?

I have 19 inch rims i have put on a alltrack same rims as the new gti 3 door performance
I have no adaptive suspension but still find the ride just fine it does crash over a big pothole but no different to my old mark 6 highline with 16 inch wheels and 55 sidewalls if anything it rides a bit better
Imo they had to find something to pick on just did the vw experience on Phillip Island today and the r is a fantastic car better than the gti by far drove both back to back around the track gti feels lacking in torque to me or maybe its the dq 381 7 speed the r and my alltrack share that makes the difference?(the torque in the alltrack feels vry much like the r up to 50-60kph then pure bhp takes over of course)
Both defiantly feel more like much more torque is being put down more than the 30nm that the gti is lacking or is it the haladex awd system that makes the difference?

Nah, I have a 7R on the (.au) stock 19" wheels and it's just fine. Sure on crappy road surfaces with the DCC in Race it's a bit crashy but in Comfort it's fine and probably rides better than my Mk5 GT Sport on 17s.

All the UK reviews I read said if you tick the 19" optional wheels, make sure you also tick the DCC and all will be good. Seeing as the 19" and DCC are standard here, it will be fine.

                • How's the road noise on 19s?
My mk 7 GTI with 18s has a fair bit of road noise.

It's never been enough for me to think about it. Besides, the exhaust and radio take care of it!

Yeah there is road noise especially on coarse chip roads but dynaudio takes care of that

As far as I am concerned the Conti's (not the 19 inch size) they come with make much more noise than the Michelin PSS on 19s that I am used to. Having said that the I only notice the noise with the windows down. Michelins will fix that when the time comes.

                        • I'm thinking of going with PS4s when I need new boots... Great reviews on them including from mates with them on their cars - always a good starting point. Agreed the Conti's make a little noise on some coarse chip seal roads, but I find them pretty good in every other respect.

Would be tempted to throw PSC2s on there if it wasn't a daily for me, but would be changing them with alarming regularity if I did that I suspect...

I will be getting PS4s as well. I am not sure I can wait until I am in need of new tyres.

Yeah, PS4 are my target tyre. The PS2s were awesome on my old Golf.

                              • Hi all any thoughts comments advice on the 7.5 Golf GTI, GTI Perf Ed 1 two door?

I understand the R can't take a tow bar which is a deal breaker.

I would take all options - I belive there are 3...Luxury, Infotainment and Driver Assist.
                                TIA
