  • Yeah... but if you were actually getting a "better" car, and not just the "sister in a different dress", I could possible agree.

Let me rephrase. I would consider getting a 135i.

      After test driving a S3 I agree 100%.

      • exactly how i feel - all these options make the car so expensive that you canget a lower spec car like a 135i or s3. and those options dont add squat to your final resale come selling time - like flushing money down the toilet. why you would spend 3500 bucks for rns510 is beyond me

I always thought people optioned up so they could enjoy the options over the ownership life of the vehicle ?

I only optioned DSG and leather but I fully understand why people go for more options rather a no option "S3" or 135i (the latter which I think is hideous)

I place little value on the end resale. Otherwise I would not buy new

Note.... manual BMW 135i has a "RRP" of $75,000.
By the time that's on the roads, it's $82,837.76 in NSW for an average driver. You'd be lucky to negotiate it back down to $75k. But you're getting a seriously lacking in features car compared to a fully featured one.

Why would you spend $3500 for an RNS510 and the Dynaudio? Well, maybe cause it's less than the $5307 that Audi charge for the Nav upgrade only (i.e. not an audio upgrade) on the S3, or the $6150 BMW charge on the 135i (Professional Navigation + Professional Audio).

I mean come on guys. It's a bit rich for you guys to come in here and have a go at someone optioning the R and asking why they didn't go to some other "base model car" costing thousands of dollars more, and also critise the cost that VW charge for options when the makers of the cars you're suggesting are even more expensive!

            • I did say if it was my money it is what I would do but if he was happy with it and could afford it, then go for it

I managed to get mine at a smidge over 51k driveaway due to not many options and some haggling. At that price, to me, an R is not quite as good value. But it is your car. If you are getting the car you want at a price you can afford, good for you.
I know I'm going a little over the threshold for this category but, the other two cars I would consider buying are the M3 or the Audi S5, the problem is
75k will get me a 08 for the Audi with about 50ks on it, the M3 would be no later than a 06 with 60+ks on it
The 135I is too small as my wife and I are planning to have a baby in the next year
The S3... I think the R is a better car, I know most people will disagree, plus even if I'm wrong, the S3 with those specs would cost way more
We have a MKV at the moment, The R even with a smaller boot will be just enough for what we need
Thanx for sharing your honest opinion

I know the turmoil of "do I get a used car instead" all too well.

The 135i sounds like it is out, and agree with your reasoning on the S3 as well.

The R is a cracking car and if it is in budget, enjoy it. A few more luxuries never hurt anyone

I suppose i am just saying (as I am a bean counter by trade), I can forego a lot of luxuries such as leather and sat nav as I'd rather have a few thousand dollars extra in my pocket for a car which looks the same as a basic one. I only got DSG and 18s as they matter to me but the rest can be kept.

Think about it this way - if you work as a real estate agent or something that image counts for a lot (which I don't give a rats a$$ about), a 135i or S3, even in its most basic form, will make you look far more successful than a fully spec Golf R. While I would prefer an R to either of those cars, most of the general public probably wouldn't if they could afford it. Hence why Beema X5s and Porsche Cayennes are all over private schools in QLD (and just for the record, I went to one of those schools but was driven in a Toyota Corolla as a kid so I am not against these schools or the people that go there or if they choose to drive a soccer mum car).

                    • Yep - but that's just the thing. I depends whether you care what other people think about you, or care about yourself. I personally don't buy things so that other people think more of me... but hey, that's just me

I don't care if people think I'm successful or not based on the car I drive

My wife and I are in our early 30's and don't want to be driving a car that makes us look like we have money because we don't
We both want to drive a good car with some serious performance and we all know how good the R is, and it's pretty special to know that you have a car that has all the extra features available to play with.

Originally I wanted to have Racing seats, 19' black wheels, ACC, DSG, Sunroof and GPS, I wanted it white and had to have 5 doors. All the other extras were irrelevant

Anyway, my original questions was, if I was paying more than I should for a car with all the extra options, considering there aren’t many cars out there with all those options to compare prices with

I don’t care if the price is right as long as I know I’m not paying more than what’s worth

                              • MY12 Golf R stock sound system?

Hey Guys, what is the stock sound system (console unit) for the MY12 Golf R?

I don't plan to tick the box for the Dynaudio upgrade, just wondering what the (overall) capabilities are for the car above. All I really need it for is my iPod.
