Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I had the Stage 1 tune done today too!
I was going to go straight to Stage 2+, but, the APR Golf R downpipes and fuel pumps are out of stock for a few weeks, so I just got the Stage 1 to tide me over until the parts come in!

Without wanting to offend anyone. If you don't get at least Stage 1 on your Golf R, then you are missing out! (Actually, if I wasn't a moderator, I'd use stronger terms ) This is how the Golf R is supposed to be! It's no longer slower than my Polo GTI was, and honestly, it feels like 300kg has been taken off the car! hehe
The DSG does less dropping of gears whilst pottering around at ~60km/h around town. And when you put it in M and take off... well, it's just like Fab_R's Stage 1 times would suggest

It's so easy that blind freddie could install this mod! As mentioned, it attaches to the existing sockets. It's FAR easier if you can drive the car over a pit... but if not a REAL jack is fine! DO NOT INSTALL THIS WHILST USING THE JACK FROM YOUR BOOT! If you get under the car using your standard jack, you're a f'n idiot! (and yes, I know I'm a moderator, but you really can't put that point in strong enough terms!)

ya it was the first thought i had when I drove it out of the shop.... so very quick. That was/is my point about buying in the first place. We buy sunroofs and trannies, combo suspension, very cool stereos and satnav, leather stuff, wheels. I spent over 15k in extras. All purchasers should budget for a 1500buck tune. Should also be sanctioned by VW like Merc and Holden already do. Sanctioned upgrades, done by professionals using best breed products. Warranted, which this upgrade done by Harding's is.

With so many people getting the Stage 1 tune done and hearing people's comments on the results it makes biting the bullet and getting one done all the more tempting.

I apologise if it's been discussed already but will having a tune done effect your vehicles warranty?

Straight up, I'm sour. And jealous. If Dave gets this as well I'm gonna lose it.

I have done the LAKINs and the TINTs.. And after the drift night I have been stinging for my next mod. This stg 1 is killing me.

From research done, not really. yes, maybe, kinda, no.... hope i cleared that up. If the mod effects other components those components will not be covered. The tune itself is covered by the company carrying out tune. some say to get car detuned before service work, I've told my dealer about the tune, they've actually had a couple demos tuned themselves.... The car should come standard with this tune. Suggest next gen will be.

              • More importantly, will your engine and DSG be covered under warranty with a tune. Not that it anthers to some people.

Just get it done man! :p
You were already talking exhaust this and exhaust that - so that'd have just as much chance of causing a warranty issue as a tried and tested ECU upgrade that has been done on thousands of cars around the world

I don't know how many R's have been sold in Australia thus far... but I know that the APR R tune alone in Australia is already in the triple digits

                  • yes talking with the boys from Harding, they have done hundreds, many to my surprise lob at the workshop directly from the showroom with 10-30k's on the clock. They have NEVER had an issue with the tune causing issues. If you were concerned and lets say a problem manifested regarding DSG, you would have tune removed, then take into VW for repair. Will depend on the dealer as well, I've told mine and have been assured there will not be an issue so long as I had it done by Harding....
as Corey_R says, just get it done man the difference is substantial.
I'm going to drive for a month and get use to improvement, at this stage though am having second thoughts on FP and Air. Thinking the Tune will be all I need.

That's part of the reason I haven't started yet modding :p Also taking the family to Vic for skiing this year so will wait and see if I have any spare cash after that!!

been bitten with no know antidote... shaving .5 seconds off quarter mile not of interest to me but,
I know there are those who choose not to want more noise, they want to be low key, travel under the radar... Thats not me, I want Vader to rattle windows as I drive by, kids to cower with fear and old men to bleed from their ears.

When I test drove the R, turbo lag was my main issue, if what you're saying is true, its a shame I can't test drive an APR'd one. Actually.........what if I were to arrange a test drive, take it to the APR dealer (literally 5 mins from VW) and get a trial tune! A bit cheeky but, hey maybe I'll be interested in buying one. Funny tho, the 2 or 3 guys that test drive it after me will think it stonks out of the box, order one and when they received theirs (in 9 months) they'll be going back to the dealer complaining that their new car is not as quick as the demo one they drove!

                              • Ok so I am currently having a running verbal stoush with a work colleague who drives a 2002 Porsche Boxster. He reckons I'm full of it telling him that an APR stage one Golf R can achieve 0-100 in 4.7 seconds even after showing the g-tech evidence online. Says something along the lines of " a full second difference with a software ECU mod.... pffft...NO WAY mate..." Refuses to believe it or Fab_R's time of 4.3 with APR stage 2. Man I wish this guy could be taken for a spin in your R Fab! Would love to see him eat some humble pie...
