Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Took delivery of my R on wed .
    First impressions are very favourable.
Ended up with a Grey one to end the uncertainty over delivery of my Rising Blue.
With the 19 in wheels and standard tint it looks great the smoked grey headlight covers really set off the grey and black highlights on grill.
Reading all the concerns about the 19 in wheels I feel are unjustified I Do NOT have acc and it still rides fine .
Things that I have really enjoyed .
The engine note ,burble and noise on downchange are just the right balance between sporty and overbearing.
A little point but a nice feature is that the sound system <mdi fitted to my I phone>partially mutes when reversing or driving slowly to allow you to hear the acoustic parking sensors.
The overall feel of the car is purposeful: cruise when you want take off like a scalded cat when needed .
Very solid one piece feel .
Side note thanks to my dealer for sourcing a car which colour apart was almost identical to my spec.
    Further updates to follow.
Final question what tyre pressures are guys running in the 19 ins
    .

Congrats. I'm wondering, is it a 3dr grey, 19's, satnav, leather etc?

Camberwell VW had one with that spec sitting in the showroom for AGES. The sales staff mentioned that if it had a sunroof, it'd sold 10x over.

Ah cool, I'm guessing that dealer probably still has the car sitting there!

            • APR stage 1

Hey guys, Just want to let you guys know that I had my stage 1 APR chip installed on monday. If anyone was thinking about getting one, I would take advantage of the 10% discount offer at the moment because the difference is worth every cent. The power increase is extremely noticeable.
My cousin came over last night with his race chrono gps lap timer. Before the chip i recorded 3 times between 5.4-5.5 seconds. Last night I recorded three times. 4.8, 4.76 and 4.74. This was done with 1/2 tank of fuel and 2 persons in the car.
Overall I am extremely happy with the apr chip. The beauty is my 60k golf is recording the same 0-100 times as my dad's 2010 m3 convertible.

Thanks for the feedback ganis5. When another one of our forum members first got his R and had it chipped, he posted a 4.88 and 4.68 using his GPS performance device. A lot of naysayers and negativity and disbelief started cropping up from others who questiond "what else" had been done to the car! But it's great to see that you are experiencing very similar times, even with 2 people in the car! Cheers

                  Awesome times mate.

Pretty much spot on to the times that FLM posted up a while ago after his Stage 1 remap.

                  • Thanks guys. I was only originally going to get the stage 2. But after experiencing the stage 1, I am more then happy with the performance gains. Oh and I also disconnected the vacuum hose to the 2nd exhaust pipe, leaving the flap open all the time. It has made a bit of a difference to to the sound of the car.

                      • where those times done using launch control?
Great to see the improvment of the APR chip, and it matches nicely with FLM's times too.

Does this mean the car is always loud and never shuts up when you're cruising?
Or the opposite, it never gets loud?

I'd assume it means it's always louder. The UK guys have been doing it for ages, they call it the flapper mod from memory hehe. I'd prefer to leave it be, but each to their own.

                              • Hey guys. The times where all done using launch control. Holding at about 3k before releasing.
I have been happy with the flapper mod mostly due to the fact that I drive mostly around the city, so no long highway drives. If I where to go on a longer trip i would just plug the vacuum hose back in, to allow the flap to open and close when it wants. At the moment it is open all of the time, giving the car a deeper tone. Its not droney though.
