I have heard of people (2 friends in the last 6 months) that have driven away a S3 Sportback (5dr) with some inclusions for around $65K ..... Audi is MUCH more negotiable than VW .... RRP is an indication only ......

So when the R hits anywhere near that price, its an S3 for me. It is a much more classy car with the same performance.

    • Heh wow... the dealers must be desperate to make numbers if they're selling S3's at $14k below the advertised driveaway prices plus adding in some inclusions. If that really is something which the average person could achieve, then I could understand it then.

          • Yeah - the configurator has been up for a while in germany, with the prices etc. But it doesn't give much hint as to what the car will actually be when it ends up here.

There are other issues I have with Audi. Charging so much for an arm rest for example, when it's in the Golf as standard. Flat bottom steering wheels, extra. I mean come on.. this is a $69k hatchback (base model RRP, +taxes and onroads etc) and you're paying for things which come standard on a $39k Golf GTI. It's just not right
I agree, Audi options prices are expensive, but...

Except I paid low 70s driveaway for my S3. To put that into perspective the options I ticked (Nav etc) added up to more than $10K. So, in theory a vanilla S3 could be yours, driveaway, for low 60s. I did buy my car from a friend who was kind enough to do me a few favours, but there are plenty of other people who have bought S3s recently with 5 figure discounts off the RRP driveaway price.

I'm not so sure anyone will be getting 10K+ off a Golf R any time soon. Your point is still valid, but the real world price differential may not be as great as it seems on paper.

all it needs is front suspension that is not tuned to understeer, and a swithc you can send 100% to the rear by choice, and youve got yourself a tail happy rear drive oversteerer!!
Same system as the facelifted S3s.

In stock trim I don't think it can/will actually send 100% to the rear (ie. 50% to each rear wheel). From memory 5% will stay at the front under the type of conditions you are hinting at.

However, if only one wheel has grip, and the other three have slip, then 100% can momentarily be sent to a single wheel until grip is resumed.

There's a bunch of stuff about it on the Haldex website and some good info on ozAudi too.

Thanks for that update. I'm happy with that. If 1st deliveries happen at that time, I can go test drive and inspect one to make sure I'm 100% happy, and then place my order, and hopefully have it in time for Christmas next year

That's very interesting. Do you have a particular source for that information?

The reason I ask is that sources like Car Sales and Ausmotive has indicated that ours is 199Kw too. The Audi S3 in Australia has an 'older revision' of the motor which has 188kw, but the TT-S in Australia has the 'new revision' motor producing 199kw. Since the new revision which is going into the Golf R in every other country is already being used in Australia, so there are no issues with our fuel quality etc, why would they build a whole new bunch of the old revision just for the Australian Golf R?

                              • 1 piece of paper I saw had Golf R details on it and its 188kw aparently .... ... nothing an ECU upgrade can't fix though ....... 188kw S3 and 199kw TTS chipped = both 240kw .....

The other piece had a timeline of models to be introduced and it had the new Polo in April and Golf R & GTD in May .... no Scirrocco on it I'm afraid ....
