Firmware updates for RNS510 units in Australia/NZ

I tried updating the firmware on my RNS510 today and fear I may have bricked the unit. Based on the advice in this thread I was upgrading to 412 code (my unit is a 'D' model according to the version info screen), but the unit will now not boot up.

I have burnt the recovery CD but can't get it to boot from that either. I can't even eject the recovery CD at the moment either.

Does anybody out there have any ideas where I might go from here? Would replacing the hard drive make a difference, or is the firmware kept on some flash memory device inside the unit?

Any advice gratefully received.

It may be recoverable. I am assuming you meant 4120 firmware. If you cant get someone in Sydney, PM me.

I tried to update an RNS510 rev D manufactured late 2010. I was able to extract the PIN as VW wasn't able to give the owner the correct code. I also changed the DVD region to "0" (region free). Map update wasn't a problem. My issue is that it had sw 1580. It would not accept 4020 or 5238 as an update. It locked up and would reset with the three fingers. I was able to get it back using the motordiag program.
Does anyone have ideas on this?

I don't think 1580 is an eu/au firmware off the top of my head. Might be Chinese or US. Check the system detail numbers in diag.

It came out of a MK6 car in a wreckers. I should have done a screenshot when it was connected to the computer. Unfortunately, the owner is in Central Sydney and I am in Orange. A VW dealer charged $80 for the pin and it didn't work which is where I stepped in to find the pin to unlock the unit. If a DIY day comes up, I will get more info. It stumped me as it was a newer revision with a strange firmware that would not let it update. Nav worked fine on his trip home and the radio is now useable so all was not lost for a drive to the country

I think its a Chinese unit.

Only references to 1580 I can find are on Chinese websites.

If the radio tuner works (ie has correct frequencies available on bands), then it MIGHT be possible to change the device IDs via Setconfig or RNS Manager and then flash an EU/AU firmware on it. But I would give that maybe a 30% chance given I've never tried it. Could end up with a dead mainboard. But not too much to loose I guess in this case.

I'm happy to have a crack at it if for nothing more than to see if it can be done...

I will let Paul know. They are much nicer with the extra bits in the newer firmware. It doesn't currently have RDS or the AC displaying. At this point though, I think he is happy as it is an upgrade from the standard radio without knowing much about the extra features.

Hi Pete. I have an original V6 map disc from a dealer. Your welcome to use it and post it back to me or I can organise a copy for you..

A DNS or a RNS 510 If a RNS you do it with a DVD yourself Don't need a cable.

Burn the disk put it in, wait It will either do it or leave it as it is. Takes an hour roughly Read through the thread all instructions and pictures are there

did the software update seems all good. I tried loading the ver 6 au maps hat I have but it is not being recognized by the head unit. does it need to be the original disc as I never got one with the car.
