did the software update seems all good. I tried loading the ver 6 au maps hat I have but it is not being recognized by the head unit. does it need to be the original disc as I never got one with the car.
thanks
You cannot load the same version map over the top of itself Have a look for a V5 and load that then update to what you had Other option is to spend $55 and buy V7.
Please don't ask on here for a copy.

It looks like there are a few newer versions of firmware that in OP. However h/w compatibility is questionable. For instance, the 5269 and other 52xx have a comment "All D and later versions", my RNS510 is the 1T0035680C, so it would appear I'm right out of luck.
But wait! There's more. This firmware list mentions my version as being supported with a "modified version" of 5269... well, that is cryptic enough for me to avoid and let someone else experiment. Does anyone know what this is about?... original thread in german (I speak german btw). I'll keep digging.
UPDATE: Looks like this modified firmware is the way to go. http://gpsunderground.com/forum/volkswagen-seat-skoda/20308-all-available-firmware-rns510-45.html

Put 4120 in and be happy Mine is a C and it works as well as anything VW can There isnt really any advantage going to anything else.
Euro versions are different due to the size of partition required for the larger maps.
Also some of the higher numbered versions are for units with DAB boards and you can stuff an older unit if you load it, be warned
Yes, I installed 4120 last night, no issues - despite many reports of needing to recode when flashing 4120 on other threads... The newer 52xx stuff is reportedly faster...

For the moment, I'll stick with 4120 as per your suggestion... thanks.
As you see from what you have posted it supports DAB and DAB+. Also that forum page 45 link is a European one and the partitions on the HDD for modified firmware is totally different
If you load it in an unit without a DAB board you run a very good chance of bricking it.
Thats why most of us dont use it.
Have never had to recode ever in several incremental upgrades
Yes, the model number must match... Mine is the 1T0035680D, 680 is the Australia/NZ version, so I wouldn't touch it unless the version matches the description. There are a few people who asked the question regarding this specific version and some answers saying, you can do it anyway... I'll PM them to ask how they fared.

Reason: updated model - mine is a D not a C
I have been testing 5238 for some time.
No enhancements or changes worth mentioning.
If you simply MUST have later firmware on your unit because you like to fistpump every time you upgrade and don't brick you unit, PM and I will send you a link with firmware modified for Aus.
Otherwise stick with 4120 as you won't notice anything. This is why I haven't made it available. Risk for no reward.

Does it seem more responsive?
Any idea what the 'Automatic illumination control' is, compass worth mentioning?
No. These features are from earlier updates.
The list is like a complete changelog since initial release, not the current version.
Compass has been in there since 2600 firmware, auto dimming perhaps even earlier.

I was just poking around and noticed the HWDAB field populated... 255 looks like 11111111 in binary, which I guess could mean nothing present or something present... No idea... What does yours show?
Also, I was copying some music from a music folder on sdcard to hdd, but I noticed after copying that it seems to have eliminated the music folder and moved the album folders to the root of the hdd... Is this typical or did I miss something along the way... How else do you do a bulk import?

If you read through the thread (Its a good idea) I think in one of Kamolds posts he said the 255 means IT DOESNT HAVE DAB
From GTI Forum
The version tested to work here in Australia is the 1T0035686C (1T0 035 686 C) with a Hardware Level of HW:09 and running software level 5238. This unit is a stock RNS 510 with LED screen, 40GB hard drive and is the latest available model from Volkswagen.
Only the above has DAB C and a D most definitely DONT. Mine is a C and when you put the 4120 in it changes to appear as a D but in fact is still a C Its all in the thread if you care to read it
I have a 40g HDD and a 32g SD card and I just play the music off that because it took 2 hours for the HDD to load about 10G of music in MP3 Format. It loaded each track one at a time and took a long time to do each one They are all in the root directory, about 3500 of them
My (bad) experience with WA AHG Volkswagen Dealer and firmware update
Recently during my annual service to my Nov'12 Scirocco R I posted an email to the service representative first asking if they have the technical experience and hardware to check and upgrade my fitted RNS510 unit and secondly what it would cost?
They replied that they did and the upgrade would cost AU$80.
My RNS 510 details are:
Delivery Part Number - 1T0035680D
SW-Version - 4020
Maps - AU & NX, Supplier Sensis
Map Version HDD -7005
I explained that I wanted the SW-Version and the Maps upgraded to latest and gave them links to this thread and other information that explained there is a newer version for the 680D.
When I picked the car up and checked all they had done was upgrade the Maps to HDD - 7920 but NOT the SW?
Asking them why they hadn't upgraded the device as they had quoted they told me that the latest SW-Version was on the device according to their testing equipment?
Since then I have had no success getting a refund or in fact any comments about it at all!
I contacted another VW Dealer (John Hughes) here in WA and asked them the same and they told me to come in and for NO Charge they would check and upgrade my RNS 510! So it is booked in tomorrow morning and WE WILL SEE?
Does anyone on this forum know how the dealers check these units, you would think they would be trained by VW to handle these systems on their vehicles? Servicing is not just spark plugs and oil change these days!
