Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

        • Changed my engine oil -16,000 kms. Castrol Edge 0-40

First time I've ever done this on any car, without the ramp and the daylight wasn't able to get to the oil filter (and from what others have said, going to be a b@stard of a job).

Can feel a difference, its great to feel like I'm able to maintain my own car (for once).

Easy as pie. Remove the lower undertray, look up at the front face of the block. You'll see the oil filter hanging down on an angle. Look forward of that, you'll see the wiring loom is clipped to the back of the thermo fans. Remove this clip, and push the wires out of the way. This'll make it easier to remove the oil filter (now dripping with oil) quickly.

Unpackage your new filter, and fill it with clean oil.

Put a (very light) smear of oil on the rubber 'o' ring of your new filter, and screw it on. Once the seal touches, it'll only need 2/3rds of a turn, NO TIGHTER. If you go tighter, you won't be able to get it off next time.

If this is the first oil change the car has had, you may find it difficult to get the filter off. There are many tools available, just use what works best.

Takes me about 25 minutes all up including rotating the wheels.

              Can feel a difference
              Ya reckon?

PS don't wait for the 15k mark to change your oil, do it every 10k maximum.

I don't have ramps, I did this lying in the gutter in my street and I was working in the dusk (largely by torch light). I'm glad you find it easy, but like I said, its the first one I've done and I'm still compiling the tools (didn't have a socket set until yesterday). I'm happy that I did it in the first place!

Yeah, the next was due at 20,000 kms, but as I've got the chip and recently did a track day, thought it was a good precaution.

                    • Just received my Seat Intake from dubaddiction (thanks Tim), quick delivery! Now just got to install this and the mondeo drop links. Should get some nice subtle performance increases, not expecting too much. I have been getting a chunk of surge through mid 3rd gear with my APR, hoping this helps smooth things out

                        • Any chance you can point me to where you got the CDA airbox from? I've been trying to find a cheap one new somewhere.

                          • To be honest, you can get a copy for about 250 or less...

And the cheapest you can get for a BMC would be around 650...

                            • i got mine second hand from a friend of a friend. though i know you can get them from auto barn for about $550 as well. when you do get one be sure get your self a 2'3/4 90'degree silcon piping and a small pod filter for your cold start too.

                              • Yeah, I'm looking at a good enclosed solution so I can run my own cold air feed and have it shrouded without the need of a heat shield etc.

I was looking at the K&N enclosed pod with cold air feed pipe, but figured the CDA could do the trick as well. However for those prices, I might pass on the CDA.
