Ok. Sounds like it either had a weak spring that was causing piston creep or the seal at the base of the piston was turd ie it couldn't prevent boosted air getting past it but in the other configuration could seal against the atmospheric pressure inside the TIP.
hmm I know that some piston dv's have a ring bore seal. If air comes in from the side the only way it can escape is through to the TIP when the piston is pulled open. My turbosmart though doesn't have a ring bore seal - it is a machined flush sliding fit but doesn't make a perfect seal. eg If you do the test where you hold the piston up with your finger and then suck on the manifold signal, it will fail - the piston won't float statically. It will however open in response to a big spike in manifold vacuum. ie if my DV is configured the same way as the OEM diaphragm one, then manifold vacuum when off boost would be able to suck air around the sides of the piston from the inlet charge pipe or when a boost spike occurs, pressurised air can get to the manifold signal side and actually work on the back of the piston to keep it shut when it should be opening.
It might depend on if the piston style DV is bore sealed or not as to which way it can be run.

Pretty sure this was a turbosmart and changing the orientation did fix it. I didnt expend any time working out whyOriginally posted by sambb View PostOk. Finally found a good place to mount the ProVent 200 without getting the way of other component
Two mounting brackets from Bunnings and it's done

Also changed the filter element as the system is starting to bypass after 41k+ kms of driving06 Polo TDi

I just saw on the news that there's a shortage of 30mm Jubilee clips in Perth, No anything about that??Originally posted by TDIfan View Post

 Good work though.

Just having a bit of fun.Originally posted by TDIfan View PostHaha thanks Gavin
The diesels have loads of blow by so kinking the hoses are not going to end well
Unless there is a batter routing solution, those clips are staying with me:p Hey, on the clear pipe have you an extra clip around the fuel pipes? Hey, on the clear pipe have you an extra clip around the fuel pipes?

been thinking of throwing a little dumpy muffler on the back of mine just for some noise but im worried it would be too loud and annoy me being my daily its been driving me crazy trying to decide if to do it or not hahaOriginally posted by Blue9N3 View PostReplaced the rear muffler with a straight through one. A little louder when cruising and quite a lot louder when accelerating. Sounds like a jet for some reason. Happy days

I wouldn't bother messing with the exhaust. Unless you change the whole cat back.Originally posted by LZY13B View Postbeen thinking of throwing a little dumpy muffler on the back of mine just for some noise but im worried it would be too loud and annoy me being my daily its been driving me crazy trying to decide if to do it or not haha

Depends on whether you are after more performance or just a bit of sound on the cheap. I had a 2.25" (Overall similar in size to the stock one) straight through muffler installed. Kept the middle resonator, so no drone, but definitely louder.
