Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Trackday tonight so I've finally fitted up a tow strap (FMIC piping so can't use OEM tow hook) and popped on a couple of tow stickers and a battery as rules require. Haven't fitted up the fire extinguisher for this one, not a requirement for this one but I'll get onto the bracket this week/weekend.

I think I'm in the market for a new clutch, 90k on the stock one and I've been beating up on it since going stage 2 which hasn't helped.

Years back shaneth got Phase 2 loaded, clutch didn't make the end of the street.... Then again Troy is still on a DMF with his Frankenturbo

      • Well it held up all night. To be fair I've suspected the clutch was showing signs of wear and tear before the tune was done, a bit of slip into 3rd every now and again. Thinking about an ecs stage 2 kit unless I can be convinced otherwise.

Brakes took a beating I think I'll need to do them as well.

Stock suspension sucks, I'll have to fix that as well.

I hear you RE: the stock suspension! It rolls all over the place. Thankfully upgrading bushes tomorrow (thanks Gav!) which will make a bit of a difference. What would you consider upgrading to? Coilovers or just springs/shocks/swaybar, etc.

          • The whole lot. FSB, RSB, rear toe correction and coilovers. Hit it with a big stick. I've already done most of the bushes and mounts up front, they are worth while doing.

I've got the ecs stage 2 on the red car, it's very nice, great weight to it, bites well and easily drivable in traffic.

Nice one. Be keen to hear how it all goes - I'll be going down that path sometime early next year methinks. Expensive bloody toys!

I'll probably be taking off my bracing on the silver car next year as to retire it from track days. Front strut top brace, front lower brace (never put it on the car) and rear lower brace, also have adjustable whiteline front sway bar links. Let me know if any of that is of interest. Will be keeping the rear sway bar, still need to enjoy driving it

                    • Guessing all the bracing is UR?

What are the sway bar links like?

Yes, UR bracing. I got the links as I had some knocking with the standard ones and was problem solving. The whiteline links are the same length as standard links when in the shortest setting. Apart from looking cool, being stronger and much better build than the standard ones, TBH I noticed little to no tangible gain with them. Geez I know how to sell stuff.

On my previous subaru, I ran heavy duty whiteline links on the rear sway bar, and there was a noticable improvement simply with the links, I can't say I experienced the same with the front links on this car.

If I don't sell them, I'll probably put em on the red car as they are very short links on it and I wonder if they are too short, thus changing the leverege effect of the sway bar. Purely speculative in this given the disparity in length.

It's unfashionable but upgrading the dampers alone will make more difference than anything else until you go to a decent cup kit or set of coilovers (where the dampers are components of them)

                          • Caught up with Gav and he changed the standard bushes to Superpro anti lift, which is a nice upgrade and definitely helps put the power down. Car points a lot straighter and steering feels tighter.

Here's the originals vs the superpro:

Not at all Dan, it's not everyone's cup of tea. You do oil changes, that's a good start! Your payment plan is fine too.
