Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hi Gav, great to meet you and the family yesterday arvo.

Thanks very much for scanning and resetting my ECU with your VagCom. So pleased to have such minor codes and no error codes at all.

It was also great to meet Anthony too. Feeling a bit (Forge) blue now, if you know what I mean!

    Cheers Al

    • Don't you hate it when you get back to your car, and it's sittin' on a new set of wheels.....

They felt lighter by rough judgement, but didn't get a chance to weigh them as I got the wheel alignment shop to fit 'em balance and do alignment... Haven't had a chance to play funny buggers with the car to see how it goes but I think ESC is coming on faster/easier

      • Cut off yesterday whilst changing gears, swerving, grinding and slipping of the clutch... end result is I've blown the clutch/flywheel and am up for a few thousand in repairs.

So, yeah.. That's what I did to my Polo (yesterday) and got the bill estimate for today.

        • What did you do to your Polo today?

Ow. Might be cheaper to get the upgrade kit from ECS.

Looks like a possibility, yeah. Quite a few options from ecs for the 1.8t.

Whilst it's open, what else does a stage 2 tune need?
Might as well pour money into the engine bay...

A downpipe is the first requisite for a Stage/Phase 2 tune. Don't buy anything that isn't list for the Polo as nothing else will fit without modification.

                • Hmmm, so many options from ECS. Looking at a Stage 1 clutch + flywheel, what's the flywheel to go for? (Daily driving/mild tune, no plans for stage 2+)

                  Was thinking Steel and 14lbs.

That's what I have on mine, just about to remove the clutch though, as part of the rebuild and have ordered a Stage 3 to handle it!

I saw full miltek's going cheap on eBay (I think Italy), but Catless. They do have other options but not as price competitive.

Seat sport cooler and piping kit from Gav, new plugs and some intake mods with a dump / full zorst gets you Stage 2 ready.

Not much from ECS is going to help you with any of that.

                        • I'm going to paint my new fabricated airbox.

Just wondering about success and failure stories with painting underhood components by rattle can. Generally I'd match the original in satin black but I've got a crazy idea that I might try and match the gloss blue of the tip. Thoughts?

                          • No props here, just don't short cut the job. Spray on wax and grease remover then appropriate primer. And I do 4 coats of paint with 24 hour curing time after final coat. Plus watch the ambiant temps aren't too cold as per the instructions. Plus there are new spray cans with ceramic mix available at super cheap that will help when using alloy.

Any picks mate and did you get my pm?

                            • I've got a low temp lab oven I was thinking about curing at 45c.

I did get your email mate but I haven't had a look yet. Gavin will have you exhaust flange this week.
