Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • The selling point for the 86 is a RWD sports car that is fun to drive and you can fang the back end out.

    1) It isn't fun to drive becasue the NA powered engine feels like it's lacking punch, sure it gets you there but it doesn't feel like you are going quickly.

    2) try fanging the back end out on a public road and you will damage someone/something and probably have your car crushed.
Sure it may be at road spoeeds but it's still illegal and dangerous.

    3) Seeing them at the local tracks up here they are not as quick or as engaging as other cars seem to be (you would be better to buy an old 350z if you wanted a RWD sports car)

This has all been done to death in the MkVI Golf forum by GTi and R owners

My only comment is that cars like the Subyota are all about balance. It belongs in the genre of cars like the MX-5, original Toyota MR-2 and Fiat X-19. You have to drive them on a winding road to understand - the spec sheet is woefully inadequate to explain how compelling these cars are to drive. If I was single, I'd love the Toybaru.

          • Had new tyres fitted all round. Bridgestone Potenza RE002. $184 fitted and balanced per corner with 3 for 4 deal, bargain. Good looking tyre, much quieter than contis replaced. Has solved an issue I've been investigating for a few months now, as mentioned in the problems and fixes thread.

            • Installed my original ECU with CC Phase 2 (Thanks to Gav for the Phase 1 loaner)
Removed the SAI combi tower (last part of the VAC and SAI parts remaining) and blanked off
Installed the new turbo bolts and gasket (Thanks Gav for your spares). Managed to loosen the heat shield enough to work around it. Not a fun place to work on, had to remove a few items to get access back there.

Was nursing it yesterday a little after the coolant transplant and new gasket / paste, seems solid now. Need to dial in some (more) timing and see what CC is going to do for me.

Getting the first bolt bolt back into the turbo is the key I think. Then you can use a screwdriver or something to wiggle the turbo and get the next bolt in. Once they are done up most of the way finger tight the 3rd bolt should be easy.

Need to do the logs before adding any more timing Ben. I will email you too.

Bridgestone themselves were doing the deal.

I got 4 the same earlier in the year for 175 but had to pay for all of them.

I need some boots for the S3.... Must sell more tunes to pay for them! I like the RE002s on the Polo. Maybe a matching set for the Audi would look nice?

                          • Replaced the torn LCA bushings to Cupra solid Rubber ones... New Bilstein shocks all round 1 front and 1 rear were toast!

Mum says yay it has stopped squeeking!

                            Transformed the car.
