Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Always sad to see a motor being treated poorly.
I'm hoping to be doing my install in a couple of weeks if you're still interested in my stock motor.
You could sell my turbo and have a spare bottom end for a bt build or to stroke to 2 litre!
I'm still waiting on parts to come in from the US.
Good luck either way. Still a great buy regardless.

Thats pretty much furthest away from the oil pump, so the rest would be crapped out too im sure you have already woorked that one out. Ive condemned a couple of BJX vario units now, although its rare, flags a g40 to G28 phase code. U have to do chain, unit gaskets, tiiming belts etc etc and thats when the engine is goodunlike this one and is a dear repair, so glad its rare., So transplant is the answer mate.

I cleaned a load of crap out of the pick up before, I guess there's been a whole load of knock on problems. Might be easier to do a full engine in the end.

It wouldn't have been a bargain to anyone else, labour would have killed the car off.

Still got my S3 so Happy Laps not in doubt. I was blissfully ignorant until today. Could easily have driven it for ever if it weren't for the VVT fault code. In fact it's all back together, I doubt it'll stop running anytime soon, I'll be testing my theory by continuing to use it. There was oil in that cap, so it's still getting up there.

So I have had a bit of time to think.

Got my Thursday morning organised........ Going to drop the sump and have a look at the big ends. Depending on what I find in there, it'll be another head or an engine change. redliner has mail!!

                    Woody, pmd you.

Today's instalment. Sump off, easy job. done it before.

                    Bearing caps not so easy......

FFS VW whats the problem with using hex head bolts mate? They have worked for centuries! SO off to the shops for a set of torx sockets. I got the Special Ribe tool for the headbolts while I was out too.

Lower bearing from #4 no white metal left so well close to doing the crank.

caps for 3 and 4 opposite end to the pump.

                    Crank looks sound

Shame about the engine, but loving all the other goodies you are putting together on the car.

Is there a exhaust on the cards ?

Up until yesterday there was an exhaust happening, next week.... Not sure where Woody is getting this engine from, so keep and eye on your keys!

                        • I'm sure you'll get it back on track for good money and it will still be a great bang-for-bucks toy.

Enjoying the technical guff, most of which is well over my head.

                          • enjoy the cracked caps mate? Think if you kept running it the exhaust cam would just stop and you would see some intersting carnage, be a good read!! still be no good stuck on the gateway though Gav.
Serioulsy you are at the point where you could go a step ahead of most Polos here now Gav with the opportunity to have a stronger bottom end BJX or not if you know what i mean
                            Cheers

That was one of the first things I thought of Jimmy. It's doing it economically that's the big issue for me, being from Yorkshire and all that . Rods are about $500, bearings and gasket kit. A set of rings maybe? Soon gets real expensive. At the moment my money is going to Redliner, Woody has a good lead too but it wouldn't be a straight forward bolt in.

I was stunned by the price of the bearings from VW $23 a shell. Jesus, I bought some for my G60 that cost 11 quid for the set.
