Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Given the condition of the turbo and engine, sounds like this cars had a hard life with little love. If only it could tell the story hey.

Good luck with it, sucks to hear that the original owner was spot on though for many of us that'd mean taking it to the wreckers, so its getting a second chance with you.

      • Well Gav, at least us mere mortals feel a little better when someone experienced buys a bargain car only to find it's going to cost to get it up to shape...

However, in true Gav style I hope this becomes an awesome build.

        • Easy come, easy go. Next biggest job will be getting all the oil off the garage floor. I'll be chucking it back together today, can't leave it up on blocks until I get the engine up here. Needs to be mobile.

Although Volkswagen said it needed and engine, my feeling is they didn't want to do it. I'd love to know what order the failures occurred in. I have some theories which involve, less than perfect tune, dodgy oil filters and maybe poor quality oil too.

          • Just got home and I had missed DHL. picking up the Seat Sport intercooler from them in the morning. Not like it'll be getting used in the very near future but I'll be able to look at it a lot....

Not a bad service from Darkside, shipped at 1430 on Tuesday, so midnight our time and delivery midday Friday. 2.5 days door to door.

Hopefully the pipework I ordered will be here shortly as well. Not such quick delivery....

Either way i will be watching this with baited breath.

                • I don't want anyone holding their breath on my account, it'll be a long wait.

In the short term, it'll be getting Redliner's engine when he fits a new one at the end of the month. I'd like to see it in mine over Christmas. Fingers crossed.

It'll be down to Seb to pull Redliner's out quick smart and miss his Christmas party

What happens after that, I don't know for sure. I think I'll build up the original bottom end with some rods and go from there.

Obviously, only one reason for putting rods in................................

Darkside in Barnsley? Just bought a recon'd gearbox for Redliner's mate from there too - small world.

It's all about who you know in this game eh. You have to be connected! What's a recon gearbox go for? Going to have to split mine at some point to do some syncros. 3rd and 4th are bad if you shift really quick. Synthetic oil improved it loads but they are too far gone for a permanent fix.

                        • Hey Gav how much internet window shopping did you do last night after our little chat

                          Comment

                          • Not much actually, went to the euro meet and then when I got home had a load of stuff to do to get rid of the kids today. Now sat at home and wondering what to do next?????

I guess I'll chuck the polo back together, so it's driveable for the time being.

                            Come one stars get aligned!

                            Even the packaging is dark.

It is actually, I know it'll be redundant with what I have planned for the future. Unless I stack a couple up maybe?
