Where were you taking the AFM numbers from? Exhaust tip or sensor?

    All done by the dyno.

AMD looks lean just where you use it most. I wonder if that contributed to the turbo failure?

You can feel the extra power in the AMD but the Phase 1 is much nicer to drive.

Standard, pfffft who could drive one like that?

A sustained lean mix is what is going to cause damage. AMD does go very rich which will help drop piston crown temp and avoid that damage.

AMD does make a fair bit more torque and a decent bit of mid range.

I have a bit of experience tuning 250 2T race reps and a slighly lean cruise is ok and can really help to get a crisp pickup when you open the taps. I don't know how that translates to the these 1.8T 4 strokes.

I wouldn't really be happy if I paid for a tune and it was running below 12 AFR. The dip in the power curve isn't really desirable either, I hope they tried to smooth it out.

At 114kw atw how does this compare to say the APR tune where they claim 150kw at the flywheel, so about 130km atw? That is a huge difference if it were true.

That is some good honest feedback. Well done Gav!

The AMD map was on the car when I bought it and had been for a long time. The throttle with AMD was really twitchy as though it was opening to minute throttle openings.

Both the AMD and the Phase 1 flow enough air to be making 150.

You couldn't drive in the rich zone all the time and I haven't looked at part throttle AFRs on the road. It's all academic really as it'll be written over soon anyway.

            New delivery today......

Going to do the track one and see how that goes first. If I can tolerate it, I'll leave it in for good. I have a stiff one in the S3 and TBH it's no buzzier than the previous one.

            Job for tomorrow

                Good bit of shopping today!!

312mm caliper brackets off ECS, thanks to Goodfella and Manaz http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...buy-79416.html , probably could have gone for a clutch kit too but I will see how the standard one holds out, when I go Phase 2.

Also, did several hundred bucks at Darkside for the Seat Sport cooler.

Already ordered the pipework last week.

Sounds like it's all starting to happen!
Should bring it out to Happy Laps instead of the S3

I don't see that yet Clay, it's got to be able to stop on cue first. I don't think the brakes will be up for it yet. The brackets have shipped already, so we might have them on. CI might do the fluid today as well as the dogbone bush.

I also have a re-occurring fault related to the cam timing which could be due to a duff belt install being a tooth out or a failing VVT solenoid, according to google mechanics. Belt covers coming off first though.

                          One step forward

So this afternoon I fitted the Track dog bone mount insert. Not driven it on the road. Too many cars parked behind on the drive.

The dash isn't buzzing like a swarm of Bees so I reckon it'll be ok.

A press would be a welcome luxury, but not even having a bench to put it on, I'll use a handy car instead.

                            True garage mechanic style there.

Good to know it isn't vibrating the heck out of the dash.

                              Two steps back

So the Polo had thrown a d VVT/cam timing code a couple of times. Net research pointed at a tooth out on the cambelt or with the timing chain between the cams. I was sceptical about the timing belt as the car ran so well. I couldn't see any reason for the cams to be a tooth out either. No reason that the cams had been out of the head.

As predicted, the belt was timed correctly and the there was the correct number of links between the marks on the cams..... Arse, that then pointed to the actuator being duff.

Then something caught my eye near the pulley on the exhaust cam.

                              Shiny aluminium

The result of oil starvation maybe? Belt massively overtightened?

The pad wearing away on the actuator, resulting in cam phasing fault.

So with the head essentially being scrap now...... What to do next? Replacement std head, AGU big port or something?
