Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Are you getting chunks or fine mist? It seems my full tank of Caltex produced only a fine mist of soot on the hatch, I then moved to Shell and I have fat chunks over the hatch, so so ugly.

    • I get both. I only have ever used BP Ultimate.

I believe the upgrades are the breather pipe fitted at factory, and forged pistons or something. Most people on this forum with the new (CTHE) engine have had much less oil usage than the old (CAVE) engine.

        Alex.
I went in to buy a MY13 5-door Polo GTI today, brand new. Before signing on the dotted line, I checked the chassis number for a build date and the engine number. The build date was August 2012 and the engine was a CAVE. Ironically, they also have an "almost brand new" (registered 13th March) demonstrator which on checking was actually built 2 months later in October 2012 and does have the CTHE engine. So beware - not all MY13 cars have the CTHE engine.

This of course left me in a quandary. The brand new, never been driven car (Flash Red) is 2 months older than the demonstrator and it has the older engine. The demonstrator (Reflex Silver) has only 250KMs on the clock. Both cars are already very sharply priced, but they will give me another NZ$250 off if I take the demonstrator. Just to really muddy the water, they also have an Oryx White with bi-xenons and new CTHE engine. BUT they want an additional NZ$2,500 for it (they discounted the options by $800). Really not sure what to do. Shiny new red showroom car with old engine, demonstrator in colour I'm not that fussed about but with new engine and a wee bit cheaper, or stump up for the flash Oryx white with xenons, but $2.5K worse off. Decisions, decisions...

        • CTHE seems to be a little less oil hungry, but here in Europe we still have cases of high oil consumption also on CTHE...

Hard choice, I'd go on the demonstrator (except for the color), maybe asking for further 250$ reduction on the price (typical Italian negotiation )
I'd also put a finger inside the exhaust pipe of the demonstrator: after 250Kms you should already understand if it's one of the "1liter-x-1.000Kms"...
Also check the dipstick before start the engine: they may have topped up something, but if the oil is below "max" not a good sign...

          • 1,100kms since the last Litre was put in. Just checked and it's used about 750ml. Yippeeee - consumption is increasing.

            • As I said in another thread, I just filled up a litre of oil. One litre in almost 8,500km. I'm liking that. Hopefully it stays at that level!

              • Had connection pipe between air intake and intake manifold #6R0 129 684 E & ventilation hose for the air intake #03C 103 558 AA. replacement on 18/03/13, dealer added 1.3litres of oil.

My pessimism has unfortunately been confirmed - low oil indication came on today after 884km, had to top up.

So that's all there are for band aid fixes, I reckon I'm due for a new motor!!!!!

Have added in excess of 5.3 Litres since 7/2/13 over 4046km.

                Anyone top this?

Mine did almost exactly the same distance - 7700 I think. One little top up and away she went. Level has stayed good since.

is that after a breather hose change or you saying you only top up 1litre within 8ooo km.

I'd go for either of the CTHE options. If it does suffer from high oil consumption you could say "that's bad luck" but if you take the CAVE and end up with the same problem you'll be saying "I should have known..."

While Kawabanga points out that even some CTHE vehicles have experienced high oil usage, from everything I've seen they have improved quality issues with the CTHE rather than made them worse (or made no difference).

                      • Looks like a consumption test for me. Consumption is increasing and increasing. Just done 1,500kms and used well over 1 litre. Booked in next Tuesday to get the clutches looked at again and to start a consumption test.

Yeah! The vibration in first is getting worse and in the even gears, it's felt like the clutch has 'slipped' on accelerating (e.g. it doesn't kick down and then the whole car jerks / slips) - heaps of fun!

                              • Anyone know what oil they use in a consumption test? Getting one started today and they don't want to use my oil (Liqui Moly Top Tech 4200) they want to use the VW oil.

Is that because they want to put a thicker viscosity in there so it doesn't use any oil in the test
