Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Polo GTI High Oil Usage - Discussion Thread
Originally posted by scobb View PostHaving enjoyed my 1.2TSI Highline for 12 months I'm very seriously considering a trade in to a new GTI (MY2013). This thread and others similar on alternative sites have given me some serious pause for thought. I've got a couple of questions that I hope someone might be able to answer:
1. I've read somewhere that VW has modified the 1.4 132kW engine to help overcome high oil usage. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, when the new engines started being fitted to cars? If there is a new engine variant, does the engine have a new code that I could check against to make the car I'm thinking of buying has the new engine?
2. Slightly different subject: I know the standard (everything but the GTI) 5-door Polo is built in South Africa. I've read somewhere that the GTI is built in Germany. Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks,
Simon
I believe the upgrades are the breather pipe fitted at factory, and forged pistons or something. Most people on this forum with the new (CTHE) engine have had much less oil usage than the old (CAVE) engine.

There is a lot more changes than just a crankcase breather and pistons, the rings are different, a new oil separator and intake pipe work, slightly different cylinder head assembly from memory too. I have outlined all the changes elsewhere on here.
Should leave it to the experts in future...Alex Aescht

Wow a quick experience that I just had. Called barloworld VW at mascot to ask if I could get a free engine oil top up for my polo gti. Lady goes no since you didnt buy the car from them so you would need to pay. Then I go oh ok liverpool VW does it for free for me but isnt this VW fault due to their oil consumption problem? The service lady responds with didnt you know 9 out of 10 VW uses engine oil to lubricate the engine and it is normal to loose oil. So I go hmm yeah but not normal to top up 1L of oil a month. She goes nah thats normal I just hung up to save my breathe. Clearly not going to them to buy a new VW car if i ever do.

the limit is 500ml per 1000kms... if it is more start making noise.
staying with one dealer to do this is important.Owner and Operator of 2013 Polo GTI - Sunroof - Xenons - Reflex Silver

Quick survey question. Who has got a new breather hose installed and actually made an improvement rather than making it worse cause I rememeber reading some posts and once they changed it, it went down hill in terms of oil consumption but only the black soot was gone. Please comment as I'll be going in for a 15k service telling to fix my fuel line rattle and oil consumption problem ( after a full top up my car lasts about 2.3k before the engine oil light goes off). The black soot on my hatch is probably worse than ever. I found that BP and Shell 98RON fuel cause the most black soot. Caltex 98RON seems to be a much finer must of soot, no chunks. Could be just luck though, havent done any long term tests.
500ml+ per 1000kms is over the limit. Is it time to push for a new motor? 1L per 100kms is atrocious...Owner and Operator of 2013 Polo GTI - Sunroof - Xenons - Reflex Silver

I have had no adjustments at all... no changes. Car supplied 7/12 (Built 3/12) and the oil use was at it's worst at 400mls per 1000kms, now it seems to have dropped.
