Polo GTI High Oil Usage - Discussion Thread

In Italy it costs 63€.
I'm not sure what really change in the pipe, but something is different for sure... In a German forum they talked about a thinner inner section...

My GTI has done 1650kms and the oil light has now come on, damn!

Going to be requesting free oil top up at dealer as it is a known problem, does anyone know if it is legally covered under the warranty?
Seems like a bit of a grey area.

Of course it is. Speak to your dealer with your concerns and they should do an oil consumption test, all under warranty. Mine had the breather valve and pipe replaced after my oil consumption test. Seems to have worked......for the moment.

nearly a month later and i'm at 7,500kms.

Going in for my final consumption test (4th one, hopefully last!) on Friday morning.

Last test at 6,500kms there was only a few mL of oil used, so hopefully I see the same result this time.

I am still seriously concerned about oil spit, as this continues to occur as bad as it was from day 1 - black oil spit over the boot of the car on a daily basis, even if I wash it daily!

And you haven't checked the oil (as per the owners manual instructions) in 1650km? You should have done it 3 times by now. Engines have to bed-in. They use oil when new.

I sympathise with those owners that are over 10,000km & still experiencing excessive oil issues but for those of you that are <5000km & not bothering to check your oil - you are simply negligent.

I agree. Some spend too much time looking for the known problems, instead reading a few pages in the owner's manual.
Isn't it interesting, how some people don't do what they should, even use excuses for it, but always remember to complain about the others.

I see too many cars where the bonnet hinges are so stiff that I'm worried that I will bend the bonnet when trying to lift it.

Be aware that VWs can be notorious for 'higher than expected' oil consumption levels - up to 0.5 l/1000 km is deemed acceptable.

Also note that due to the long intervals between services (15000 km / 12 months), it is up to the owner to ensure basic checks are regularly performed.

There is no obligation for a manufacturer to offer complementary oil top ups, per se.
However, it is common for many VW dealers to offer this service free of charge.

At 1650 km, it is too early to determine whether the oil consumption you're experiencing is a result of the normal bedding-in process or an internal fault with the engine.

Going by this model's history, it is possible to be a combination of both - but some VW dealers will make you wait until a predetermined mileage (IIRC, 5000 km) before performing any oil consumption tests.

If it's determined that a fault exists, then yes, VW are obligated to fix it under warranty.

WEll its official my new polo is chewing through the oil. Much more than my previous one. I have already done a 5k km oil change, did a top up at 9k kms when the oil light came on. And now at 12.5k kms the light has come on again. So will have to go and get more oil for it to top up. As 15k Km service is not too far off.

Sorry, but I don't agree at all, Polo GTI's engine is a almost a bug, if in 1650Kms the oil lamp comes up it's 99% because he is one of the 50% faulty 1.4TSI.
Correct is to go immediately to the dealer, ask for a free top up and require immediately an oil consumption test...

With 1.4TSI, VW should make amends, apologize and take immediate action for every little doubt about oil matter....

Thanks for the advice guys, I did check the oil once since I owned the car from new, but should have checked it a few more times.

I will give the dealership a call today and get her topped up with oil asap.

Another thing I want to add is that I have always been letting the car warm up before revving over 3000rpm as has been discussed here previously. But the day before the oil light came on I stupidly took a mate for a quick burn when the engine wasn't warmed up properly, don't know if this caused the oil usage but may have contributed to it.

I'm still happy with the car anyway.

Having personally followed this thread for some time now, it's easy to say one should have checked the oil level more frequently...

But if I'm totally honest, I personally wouldn't expect a brand new car in this day and age to use so much oil, that the oil light would turn on after just 1650 km (unless it's a rotary engine).

I just noticed you are in New Zealand, so I'm not sure what the policy is over there regarding complimentary oil top ups.

I highly doubt it.

The engine may be poorly designed, but it isn't that sensitive or fragile - it's just a 2012 Volkswagen Polo, not a 1964 Aston Martin DB5!

Just rang the dealer, actually the sales guy that sold me the car. He was very good about it - asked if I had been doing any long drives, I said yes, a few, although I do live in the city so quite a few short trips also.

Anyway he said he had a bottle of oil for me that I could take and top up myself at home in 500ml lots, or as required and I assume complimentary so that is great service!

Doubt the one-off aberation would have caused the oil usage. Keep doing what you are doing. Check oil level every tank of fuel (700km?). You won't know if you have an issue until after 5000km. Oil usage should taper off gradually (hopefully).
