  • Hi all,

First post here. (Long time listener first time caller!)

I'll be ordering a Polo GTI in the next few months.

I thought I'd share a nice story about another Polo purchase in my life though! My girlfriend was looking to replaced her ageing 2000 Barina, so I'd been helping her shop around for new small cars. Last weekend we visited mostly Holden dealers to look for a replacement Barina, mainly the Barina TK as she didn't like the Spark.

After spending an entire day looking at non European cars in order to keep me sane, I dragged her to the nearest VW dealership to test drive a Polo. (I had no intention of buying, as I have a current Hilux SR5 D4D through work) We test drove a white manual TDI.

She was so impressed with the quality of the build and the drive itself, that she started to consider buying a polo instead of a Barina. Both the dealer and I laughed when she raised it, given the incredible wait time for getting one. Un-deterred, we got on Carsales.com.au that night and looked for Polo's. A ex-demo had just been posted at a dealership across town, so the next day we went out for a test drive.

It was a Red 2010 Polo 3dr 1.4 N/A DSG with 5000k on the clock, selling for $20,790 here in Brisbane. She took it for a test drive, and once again, was so impressed bought it then and there on the spot, trading in the bombed out Barina for a drive away price of $18,200.

Whilst I wouldn't buy a 3 door, automatic or petrol- it was quite a snare given Polo's are so rare to come buy. She picks the car up tomorrow and is very excited by the prospect of joining the elite (small) club of Brisbane Polo drivers.

I, on the other hand- am incredibly jealous!

      The Red polo was a 3 door? that isn't a TSI that's a comfortline 1.4ltr n/a. Still not a bad price congrats.

        • Murph, congrats.

Are you prepared to wait the 18 months I got quoted on the weekend to get into a Gti? I'm guessing they're now underpromising in order to over-deliver (usually the other way around) but it's still an insane wait for a 30k car. I'm in the same boat and would gladly buy one today if I could get a new one within 6 months but it looks like it'll be a while before that happens. I'm hopinh behind the scenes that between now and 1 January 2013, VW Australia get an increased allocation.

One interesting thing I've noticed is that the European reviews of the Polo Gti aren't near as glowing as our local reviews. I put that down to the fact that they've got more to choose from (Skoda Fabia, SEAT Cupra etc.), lower prices, and also the fact that the Australian Polo pricing was fairly reasonable (although VW still haven't really passed on the massive appreciation in the AUD vs. the EUR).

Congratulations to your girlfriend. Just curious though, you wouldn't buy an automatic or a petrol car but you're planning buying a Polo GTI?

I should have said petrol N/A. Petrol turbocharged is fine. Twin charged even better!

I must say though, I didn't realise the GTI came only with the 7 speed DSG. I just assumed it would be manual standard!

That kinda throws a spanner in the works...

Not at all. I'll buy a Golf if things stay that bad.

                • I've waited a while to post in this thread. MY GTI IS HERE!!! I picked it up last Saturday, then cruelly had to work away from home for 4 days. My expectations couldnt have been any higher, and VW have done a brilliant job in meeting them. Rather than rambling on, here are my first impressions.

                  Pros:
LED/Xenon lights. These are incredible. Like, almost worth 9 months waiting incredible. I know you might have got your car sooner, but I'd totally regret not optioning these. For a car that is basically a big gadget, these are the gadget-y-est thing about the GTI, and score massive thumbs up from everyone I've shown the car to.

Interior: Quality AND quantity. There is so much cool stuff inside. I may be spoiled coming from an ancient Nissan Pulsar, but I don't think the novelty of flappy paddles (or a working speedo) will ever wear off. Also, touch screen stereos are where it's at. Who cares that it's probably a bit more difficult to use than a normal one. It's a goddamn touchscreen stereo for god's sake!

Noise: My friend asked how many stray cats I've pulled out of my intake manifold. While that may be an exaggeration, there is some seriously cool induction noise happening here, what with the blower and the turbo and stuff.

Euro plates look sweeeeet as well.

                  LOTS OF OTHER PROS

                  Cons:

Torque steer: Again this is probably because torque steer is a foreign concept to a 1.6L pulsar, but the steering wheel is a big wriggly over mid corner bumps, not really confidence boosting.

Brakes: Hard braking = Hazard lights flashing. What imbecile thought of this? I can just imagine the laughs I'll get if I take it to a track day...

Gearbox: No issues except that this afternoon I went to take off and there was no drive. The screen showed that the gears were "flickering" from D1-D2. I know other people have encountered this.

                  Boot: A bit small

I'm nitpicking now. Overall I'm super impressed and can't wait to get to know "Gunther". Now excuse me while I take him for a hoon, I mean, break the engine in...

EDIT: Candy White, 5 door, Xenons, Comfort pack, Audio. Alarm. No photos because I'm fairly sure we all know what they look like by now.

                    • The Polo GTI is an amazing bit of kit; but I'd say for pure driving fun, a basic 77TSI manual + a 100kw tune is hard to beat!

Dude, you're kidding right?! Torque steer isn't a con, it's a show of how manly you are being able to cope with it and it's just another nicety of the car!

As for the hazard lights under hard brakes, be grateful that they are there because the one day that f**k-stick in his commodore notices how hard you're braking, you don't get stuck with a rare-as car you have just waited 9 months for in the panel shop, not able to get fixed properley because parts are so rare! This is like people who want the DRL's (that they can't see) turned off for no apparent reason....
