Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Custom is the only option at this point. There really is not large enough demand for them to make it worthwhile for any manufacturer to build in quantity.

I have a prototype exhaust on my car which was developed by HM Headers in conjunction with Viezu which didn't go into production. The original was unresonated and it was LOUD. Just ask anyone that heard it.

I had it on for a couple of months before I had a local exhaust shop modify it to install a resonator to tone it down. Now it's just about perfect. Quiet around town and still a decent amount of noise on WOT.

I had posted up some video/sound clips which are in my build thread. Gear changes with the unresonated exhaust were deafeningly loud.

Here's a "before" video of the stock exhaust with 3" DP.

      New exhaust:

Here's the audio clip. Probably doesn't give a true indication how loud this is. This was a cool morning and the first 60 seconds the auto-choke is active. After that it quietens down... and then a couple of revs with a pop.

Here's a photo from under the rear of the car - system is non-resonated with only a small muffler at the rear.

A quick sound clip of the new exhaust running through a short tunnel:

      Resonator added:

Fitted up to 3" DP which drops to 2.5" just before joining up to the cat-back section.

      Finally new tips installed:

So it's all possible, however none of this is off the shelf unfortunately. You'll need to find a good exhaust shop to custom fabricate a system for you... and be prepared to go back for some tweaks to get it just right. You probably won't get it exactly right first time around.

Also you may want to make sure that you can fit your stock cat-back back on if you ever get sick of it or for when you go to sell the car. Loud exhausts are probably not high up on the shopping list for many potential Tiguan owners.

Techtonics Stainless Cat-Back Exhaust is impossible to get as they don't ship to Australia due to DHL regulations(too big to ship).

There are a few quad tip exhaust pics kicking around the internet... though this also requires a new rear diffuser.

One of these is the ABT kit which according to their website is available in Australia (be prepared this will be expensive): Tunehouse and ABT announce range of kits for VW Tiguan

There are a few other dual exit exhausts where people have just modified the stock rear diffuser with a hacksaw to get the right tips out. The APR Stage 3 Tiguan is a good example of this:

I'm not sure on the details on this exhaust but I believe it may also be a custom set-up.

We modified a Golf R front & mid section to work, the rear box is a modified Supersprint unit (who them selves modify a MK5 GTI system that was modified for twin outlets).

The supersprint rear muffler is restrictive, it drops to 2.75" and we have done some testing with & without it. It costs us about 30nm of torque, but keeps us legal
Hacksaw on the rear apron was the easy bit!

I ordered a Techtonics system from the states a few months back. They did have to modify it for shipping and include another bracket, but aside from that there were no shipping issues. It only took 5 days as well. Mind you, it was $270 to freight it.

Cat back or dump pipe? Or both

Twas a Catback, but when I asked about the full system they said they had no problems shipping it. I was rather particular and most likely pissed them off because I asked about 20 questions.

Well I'm not going to ask 20 questions but I'm sure everyone wants to know if you have it installed on your car yet and what it's like in terms of fit/finish and most importantly exhaust note.

Today I got my quad tip exhaust fabricated and now Tig got a complete 3 inch system from turbo to the tips. Now sound level is under control and I am quite happy with it. Now needs to get an ABT rear skirt. Bit expensive but I will get there.

I got it done from a local exhaust shop Dandy Exhausts - High Performance Exhaust Systems, Mufflers, Suspension, Brakes - Dandenong, South Eastern Suburbs Melbourne They are bit rusty but I gave them few chances to get it right. Also I had 3 inch exhaust from stiffy86's car as well and many other bit and pieces I collected over time including a GTI quad tip muffler , flanges etc. So finally they all modified a lot to build the system. So it is hard to say a price but for a cat back I think all together cost me around 1.5K and DP did cost me about 1K.
ABT Australia happy to send the rear skirt only for the Tig for 1.4k , If you go for whole muffler and skirt package it will cost around 2.5k
