Ok it looks like they come as separate parts which means I could,go down the second hand route providing the rest of the wheel is in acceptable condition. My third question is does anyone know of any other VAG model that has flappy paddle shift fitted as standard or available as an extra with the DQ500 7 spd transmission? I am just trying to figure out if VW have a technical reason not to fit this option to this particular gearbox or are they just being awkward?
Ok, just answered my own question the Q3 has it available as an optional extra.
I'm pretty sure Tigs in other countries do come with flappy paddles with DSG fitted. Unfortunately it's not even an option here. There was even a story of someone receiving their Tig here in Oz with a flappy paddle steering wheel fitted. Dealer said this was a mistake, however I'm guessing that the guys on the production line put the wrong steering wheel on or vehicles got mixed up along the way somehow.
Anyway it's definitely something that goes on for other markets.
You could even fit flappy paddles on a conventional auto.
Certainly seen some examples in the early days on other o/seas forums when I was first researching it.
I am aware paddle shift is fitted on the old slush boxes and the original 6 spd DSG gearbox,The reason why I was asking the question is IF this particular DQ500 DSG box went tits up during the warranty period VWA could use this as loophole not to honour the warranty claim as you have a unauthorized VWA modification to the gear selection method. However if they are offering the aforementioned method using the same type of gearbox elsewhere or in a different vehicle like the Q3 then it would negate their argument not to honour the warranty claim

I think it is highly unlikely that they could pin a DSG failure on a flappy paddle steering wheel being installed. Essentially it will be doing exactly the same thing as running your car in manual mode from the gear stick. Plus the functionality is inbuilt into the electronics of the car anyway and you're just enabling an option that already exists in VCDS. So they really can't say that it wasn't designed to have it fitted as it is supported but just not installed in the factory.
If you're really worried then I'd get a VW dealer to do the physical swap over. That way if anything does come back to bite you on the bum then from an insurance perspective then you've got a VW service receipt stating the work that was carried out. Though they may want to put on a genuine spare parts supplied through VWA which would not be a cheap option. I understand this position from some workshops as they then know exactly what they have put onto your car - especially when it comes to things like airbags....
Like any mod you do it won't be covered under manufacturer warranty. It's a risk you take doing anything to your car that you don't stuff it up. I personally think the risk is less on the side of the DSG and more on the side of the airbag as there's no way to test this (other than it not throwing a fault) and this is something that you really need to work if you're in the unfortunate position having an accident.
FWIW (haven't been following this thread so I hope I'm not doubling up) the new Rline DSG Tiguan in Britain is now available with paddles as a low cost option (only 50 Pounds UK or something). This has only happened in the last couple of weeks.
Cheers

Typical - us poor cousins in Aust/NZ are always last to get the good stuff
I don't think you should have much trouble with the dealer/warranty, given that when I took mine in to dealer recently for service and warranty repair on frt upper strut mounts they didn't even batt an eyelid! The service tech that dropped me downtown after I booked it in actually commented that it was the first of the "Sport" models he‘d seen. Had to explain that I'd had the MFSW with paddles and other mods (including Sport badge) done myself. Goes to show either how ignorant the dealers are, or what a good job I've done of making it appear stock

Matches the original std SW exactly installed it this am in 45 min no need to change airbags wiring harnesses etc Total cost inclusive of postage AUD298.
I followed the VW SOP for removal installation of airbag steering wheel. Definitely disconnect battery before hand. VW also recommend the replacement of the steering wheel bolt which I think is a bit OTT used some Loctite and marked the bolt at 12 o clock position prior to removal as I had no torque wrench to re tighten it to the specified amount. No need to buy special tool to remove bolt. I used a std T55 Torx male socket to remove the bolt.
Very pleased with the mod makes the TIg sooooo much more driveable now even though it is still a diesel!
would you mind posting your airbag part no? i'd like to check if my airbag from MY11 tiguan is the same, if yes, then looks like they'll have another buyer!

Sorry I did not take note of the airbag part number but if your 147 is like Aussietig's then you should be ok as my original SW is exactly the same as his old one that is pictured at the beginning of this thread (1T0 419 091 AC74)

If anyone's interested, I'm selling my MkVI SW w paddles. I cannot be stuffed with the swap anymore... Too busy and lazy. Lol maybe in the future.... See Classified Parts section for details. Thanks.
I did mine the other day. It was very easy. I was obviously paranoid about the airbag part but it came off pretty easily. If you make sure you are well grounded and that you've unplugged the battery then you should be ok. Obviously it still requires common sense so still be cautious. Also make sure when you put the bag module down, make sure the VW emblem (front) is facing up. If it discharges by accident you don't want a projectile.
I couldn't find a mirror so I used the reflection on my glossy cellphone screen. Like what everyone else said, it is much easier with something that allows you to see the clips.
I had a bit of trouble un-clipping one side so I moved over to the other side and as soon as that unclipped the whole thing popped off (not in a bad way). Just be patient.
I just bought the passat/eos/tiguan stock wheel with paddles because I didn't want to change the look too much. It cost me about 300ish delivered (no airbag). The seller did warn me that he's been having a bit of an issue shipping wheels with bags into australia recently, mainly being that they take a bit longer to clear customs.
Wynnston, so did you buy the same wheel as Bambazonke?
This is something i really want to do and for the grand total of about $300 its certainly going to make it easier. Especially if the standard airbag works. I have a 2012 model so who knows.....

From my experience the airbag is a "dumb" device. One connector with 2 pins to set the thing off.
What is most important is that the attachment fittings and shape are correct for the steering wheel that you have. As long as the airbag attaches to your steering wheel and fits OK you should be fine. I think all the airbags have the same electrical connector - at least the ones I've seen do (same between the round style OEM and flat bottom wheel).
If you don't have to buy a new airbag it saves a lot of hassles.

You can buy a second hand SW for around $250 off eBay Germany. The part no is 1t0419091 just look for the new Tiguan SW's with the Tiptronic buttons. (I saw 4 this am) However the postage can be expensive so I chose to buy a brand new one from China that is partly made there as all the electronic components within the wheel still come from the EU like the original SW. Someone else has from the forum has definitely bought a SW from the same seller as me as Mr Hao has listed 2 subsequent buyers to me. The other person was from Argentina. I would also like to know how their purchase and postage went
PS my next mod has just arrived from Germany .... folding mirrors/puddle lights AUD430 landed
