  • Just done the swap, now my car is paddles equipped!

There's slight delay in shifting as pressing the button and waiting the gearbox to shift. DSG is quite instant, slight delay in tiptronic gearbox, it's understandable I guess.

I found in manual mode, the gearbox still downshift by it self. Ah well, at least I have more control of the gearbox.

    • Great to hear! Which steering wheel did you end up getting?

      • I have the normal flappy one from an EOS or jetta i think.

I didn't go for the GTi steering wheel as I want to keep the factory look. I may regret later lol, but for the time being I'm happy.

          • I'm looking at doing the swap.

Is this the right wheel for the Tig without having to change the airbag as well?

It looks like the right shape - it's the round wheel instead of flat bottom one (I have flat bottom "R" wheel and that needed a new airbag). Though best to ask the guys on the website to confirm the part # for the airbag and then check this against what you have if you want to be certain.

The safest way to do this is with VCDS - here's the scan of the hardware bits in my car:

              • If it looks like the one you have now Wynnston, then it should be fine and save yourself the cost of an airbag!

But what tigger73 said for safe measure!

Although I think he meant Part No and not serial no.

                • Corrected. Other thing you need to keep in mind is that there are a couple of different methods for the airbag to fasten to the wheel. So you need to get the airbag that has the same clip method as the wheel.
As far as I can tell these are the 2 key things is correct shape and matching mounting clippy things (that's the technical term). There's only 2 wires to the airbag and I'm pretty sure this is just the trigger.

                  • Ok thanks.

I'm a little confused, I can't seem to see a part where it says "disconnect battery" whilst doing the install. Do you all leave it plugged in while changing out the airbag....?

Seriously if you don't know what you're doing don't touch it as people have been killed by airbags accidentally deploying.

If you're going to swap it yourself make sure you fully discharge the electrical system and yourself (i.e. static) first.

                      • This mod is so tempting. Ebay europe has a few passatt / eos steering wheels no airbag (can reuse the tiguan's)but with paddles for under $200 plus shipping. Same part no as the one linked by Wynnston. After driving cars with paddles for over 2 yrs, it feels a bit weird without them..

Yes of all the mods I've made to the car the flappy paddles is certainly up there with some of the better ones. Mine ended up a lot more than $200 but certainly for that price I'd be jumping on it. I'm not sure why VW offer a DSG car without flappy paddles to be honest - or at least provide the option for them.

                          • Ok boys, looking to join the paddle shift Tig brigade! Now that i have a DSG equipped Tig. I have a fairly limited budget as I have my eyes on a few other mods and I need to get this past the Missus otherwise I will be up for one of those thermomix all in one units!

I have had a look at some of the SW's that Wynnston posted earlier. Found one that looks reasonable although from the photo the buttons look a bit tatty. Question 1 can I change the SW buttons from my existing wheel to the paddleshift one or are they integrated with the shift buttons. It appears from my research there are now 3 types if airbags but I suspect my new Tig air bag will not fit and I will end up getting the same one that Tigger 73 got for his GTI wheel. Question 2 how does one tell what colour the air bag is as I have seen some eBay sellers do refer to a colour code when selling the SW. It is very difficult to tell tell from dark grey to black from the photo these guys post on eBay.

                            • DSG Paddle shifters - retrofit paddles????

I've seen these paddles, however not sure if you can just bolt them onto an existing steering wheel without paddles or not....

                              They're available here:Bold-Sport.com :: DSG Paddle Shifters

You can also get the MFSW control module: Bold-Sport.com :: Multifunction Steering Wheel Control Unit (Paddles)

                              • Ok it looks like they come as separate parts which means I could,go down the second hand route providing the rest of the wheel is in acceptable condition. My third question is does anyone know of any other VAG model that has flappy paddle shift fitted as standard or available as an extra with the DQ500 7 spd transmission? I am just trying to figure out if VW have a technical reason not to fit this option to this particular gearbox or are they just being awkward?

Ok, just answered my own question the Q3 has it available as an optional extra.
