Why don't you get a custom tune instead of a generic APR
The IS38 was from an S3 that went BT, EFR7163.
In terms of custom tune, that is always an option for me in the future. I have been an APR customer for over 5 years. My local dealer VW Park has provided excellent customer service and support and is not far from me. Although not the most aggressive tune, I have always found APR to be reliable (through its significant global network and customer feedback) and the tunes offering enough power for my needs. I would say go with the folk who give you the most support and are your local tuner/dealers.
VW Tiguan 162 TSI Highline w/ R-Line & DAP. Mods: OEM IS38 turbo, APR IS38 98 RON ECU tune, TVS Stage 2 + with custom TCU tune, APR Downpipe and resonator delete, APR turbo inlet, VWR turbo muffler delete, APR pendulum mount, APR dog bone insert, APR Open Pod Filter (MQB), RAMAIR intake tube, APR Red Ignition Coils, NGK R7437-9 Spark Plugs, DBA T3 slotted rotors front and T2 slotted rotors rear, ATE ceramic pads front and rear Vbox: 0-100 4.1s
I too am eager to see results and video. My one questuonnis tune with the is38. What did you do there for the is38?

Hi Twyat1,
In terms of the tune, there are a number of different tuners out there, both off the shelf and custom. I chose the IS38 tune from APR because I am happy with the support, reliability and power. If I were to go custom tune, I’d probably consider Underground Performance. They have done a number of IS20 and IS38 hybrids (snailturbo) that look very promising in terms of reliability and power.
Hi,
Yes, I was lucky enough to get my hands on a second hand IS38 and fitted this today along with an APR 3” downpipe (DPK0021). I was able to reuse the VWR turbo muffler delete, APR turbo inlet, silicone intake sleeve and BMC filter. I have also enabled pops and crackles, as the downpipe also has a mid pipe section that replaces the resonator.
I have borrowed a VBOX, so I will post some 0-100 times when I get a chance.

Good evening
So on a lovely 9 degree evening in Melbourne, I found a stretch of road for the vbox.
With launch control enabled and the DSG in S, I did one glory run and achieved 4.3s 0-100km/h. To be honest, I was expecting high fours, so this really blew my mind. The true hero is now third gear which pulls like second. An amazing, memorable night for me an Tig. I’ll try to take some vids over the next few weeks, time permitting.
To those thinking about going past stage 1 and straight to IS38, you’ll get a big thumbs up from me.

Nice! Given the stage 1 tune with stock turbo does flat 5's, 4.3s is not unreasonable for stage 2.5(?).
The only problem with a car that keeps pulling through 3rd gear is that you can quickly head into license losing territory...
I haven’t done a TCU tune yet, however the launch control and subsequent gear shifts were very aggressive. It reminds me of the PDK shifts in a Porsche Cayenne. Good to know that the tubby Tig is as fast as a Ferrari 360 0-100.

That’s a great result. How much do you think you’re in $$ wise to this point.

It will get expensive very quickly. I would budget $5-6k for the project if you go for all new components. IS38 turbo would be the most expensive, downpipe, turbo air inlet, turbo muffler delete, racing spark plugs, installation labour, intake and ECU and TCU tune. If you are doing multiple runs or will be driving your car hard probably good to change your intercooler also.

The bare minimum would be IS38 plus DP and tune. You could do it for $3-4K if you were able to pick up second-hand parts

In terms of the bare minimum, if you could get a used IS38 (make sure it’s not he early version that was prone to failure), you could slap that on with a tune and that would fit with the stock downpipe. You would sacrifice a bit of power with the cat at the top of the downpipe being a restriction, however I think performance would still be greater than stage 1.....
