Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

The dog bone insert is around $100 and the install is relatively quick, under 30min of labour. There are cheaper mounts out there, however the APR insert is made from stainless steel, so is more durable than some of the poly and aluminium mounts out there. Definitely give it a go, it’s an easy mod to reverse, its held in by one bolt and is inserted between the existing rubber subframe bushing. There is also the pendulum mount that can be replaced, I think however it may be a step to far (in terms of sacrificing ride quality) for a non-racing family car.

When does peak torque arrive with the IS38 swap on the tiguan? Is it the same as golf R 1850ish?

Hi, on an APR IS38 Tiguan peak torque starts at around 3300rpm and trails off at 4900rpm. On an APR MK7 Golf R Stage 2 peak torque starts at around 3500rpm and trails off 4900rpm.

I had a few short squirts on the highway today and it is quite the Jekyll and Hyde beast. When Im solo and driving in S or M, I give it a bit of stick and the thing takes off like a rocket with a growling engine/intake and dsg farts. When I’m driving with the family in the car in D with the DSG continuing to change up gears until it finds the most economical gear, it really does feel like an ordinary/unassuming everyday car.

Are you considering an IS38 turbo swap?

I am curious about the IS38 upgrade but not at the expense of low down response as a priority over top end power.

A stock golf r makes 380Nm from only 1850rpm and I could certainly live with that but not 3,000rpm plus. I was hoping torque would arrive as quickly with an IS38 on a tiguan.

I don't understand why the stage 2 APR package ends up this way on the same size turbo? (I assume "stage 2" on the golf r is just a turbo back exhaust, intake mods and tune?) I would have thought torque would arrive at the same rpm range but just get more of it with more boost.

I am curious but want to keep low down response as much as possible.

A stock golf r makes peak torque from just 1850 rpm so was hoping for a similar response from an is38 on a tig.

I don't understand the delay on the APR package with the same turbo. Would have thought you just get more torque but arriving around the same time?

Hi, a stock mark 7 R makes max TQ of 280 FT TQ at around 2900 RPM, not sure where you got your info from. The APR stage 2 Golf is making around 370 FT TQ at 2900 RPM and Max TQ of 400 FT TQ at 3500 RPM, so an enormous increase.

I could not imagine the back breaking torque of 400 FT TQ from 1850 RPM, it would be like a Tesla Model S P100D, instant torque..........

Is 2019 model still mk7? Specs from VW website. 380Nm from 1850-5300rpm: https://www.volkswagen.com.au/conten...n-brochure.pdf

The FY19 is probably Mk7.5 spec.

My source is the APR website for the Mk 7, where they compare stock power/TQ vs the different stages:

Hi guys. Thank you for all the awesome info you have posted on the Tig.
My Wolfsburg has only had a Stage 1 Flash tune (APR) and resonator delete (which was pretty much a waste of time but only cost $100). The resonator delete made very minimal exhaust note change, something you guys most likely already knew.
Love what Stage 1 has delivered, has anyone got a 0-100 time for stage 1?

Once I get a few bucks together I will definitely go for a Stage 2 APR tune.
Thanks for providing all your experiences, great stuff!

Even thought the power output between stage 1 and 2 looks small, the way the drive drives and comes onto boost (new downpipe) is huge.

Hi, I started with APR stage 1 and vboxed 5.4s 0-100. I note however there was another APR stage 1 Tig that got flat 5 seconds...

Stage 2 will increase power/tq under the curve and be more lively. Have a think whether you would go straight to a IS38 swap as you could save some coin by skipping stage 2 install costs.

Is the APR tune just using a preset map and is it based on Australian conditions and fuel?

Not as far as I'm aware. A number of years ago APR engineers used to come to Australia to develop files specifically for Australian conditions and fuel. I don't believe this happens these days and most likely we just get the same "global" file as everyone else.

That a bit concerning using a map for different fuel and conditions. I suppose it would be a more conservative tune though being a generic map

To be clear it’s not a single generic/standard map, you can select a octane/ethanol specific map for most octane types 95/98/104/e85, depending on your model. Being a global distributor and tuning thousands of cars a year, with proper R&D to get reliable and consistent power, mastery of various ECU types makes APR a well regarded tuner.

Not withstanding all that you can go get a custom tune with Underground Racing, Etuners, Etuners Motorsport or other generic tuners like Revo, GIAC or even piggy backs like Race Chip or Burger Motorsports.

In terms of being a conservative tunes, APR holds a number of world record 1/4 mile times for the VW and Audi platforms, so I wouldn’t call that conservative.....
