Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Had the 180SX on the dyno a month ago and had fueling issues, boost leaks, etc. This is why I hate tuning these **** boxes, they're always never ready.

At least with these newer cars everyone does the same mods, and never half arsed as there's much more pride (then again the cost of the car does play a part).
If found this tuning tool online, I would have no idea how to use it but it seems to be able to read and write on the Bosch MED17 ECU. It has both OBD and bench accessories....

It definitely is bang for bucks, being a couple of hundred bills, and is definitely the way to go as he has mastered the platform. If you could do that for us and the VW community that would be much appreciated
There's a fair bit of difference between tuning Japanese cars and tuning Euros. Fundamentals are the same (fuel, spark, boost, timing) but complexity in ECU's/structure of files is majorly different. Not that I've actually done any tuning (as far as I can claim is reading/writing someone else's files) but my basic understanding is that there's a range of different software/tools that's used to read/write and manipulate the tables within the ECU.

Not all tools access all tables and very few tuners will read/write the complete full ECU. Which leads to problems if you change tuners as if you don't get the ECU flashed back to stock you can end up with remnants of one file still residing in the ECU even after the new file is written in (as they're both partial reads/writes but not complete overlays).

Yeah I much prefer a nice linear file (and more linear accelerator). Makes it much easier to control partial throttle around corners. But you may miss a little off the line in the traffic lights GP...

LOL I might work in IT as an Analyst but noway can code to save my life.

Best I could possibly do is create a few different maps users can swap out themselves, similar to how MHD works.

A tuner will tune your car and provide a few maps for you to swap out depending on power requirements or fueling constraints (mainly splash blends e.g. E50 or so).

I did come across WinOLS a while back for the VAG platform but the software it terrible and also to make it worse all in HEX. Using software like Haltech you start to take for granted things haha.. Heck even ECUflash is awesome compared to the VAG suites out there!

No promises I can/will achieve anything but if you have a JDM car that needs tuning in Sydney I can assist

                • Tigger73 I’d definitely say that an IS38, airbox and downpipe are in the pipeline at some point in the future. Based on Vericom 0-100 timing the car repeatedly does low 5 seconds 0-100 and definitely not mid 5’s.Although the Vericom is an older accelerometer it’s always been pretty dam reliable. We tested it on a Golf R and a WRX just prior to me purchasing the Tig, and similar times were posted against the VBox. Either way I’ve got a full second and more from standard, more than happy with that but low to mid 4’s is the aim and it’s here that my upgrades will end with the 2.5 APR tune 👍

                  • Yes IS38 swap and a stage 2.5 file is a pretty tried and true path to a very swift Tig. It’s a known quantity and something that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your dial. Plus it keeps everything within “safe” boundaries as it’s effectively a stage 2 Mk7 R underneath.

My thoughts on it are that if you’re going down the path of changing out turbos then you may as well spend a few extra $ and get something that’s going to take you “all the way”. Do it once and do it right.

I know there’s a trade-off between large power and responsiveness, however I believe there’s some better options out there than a standard IS38 that still spool quickly at lower rpm but have the edge at the top end.

Of course with a DSG car you really need the DSG shift points to match up nicely with whatever setup you’re running to ensure you keep in the power band. So really it’s the complete package you’re after and it’s finding the right mix of parts and tuning that works together to give you the best results for your build budget.

                    • So Santa brought me an early Christmas present this year......TNT are delivering it today.

I have been dealing with a dsg specialist, TVS Engineering, from the Netherlands since February this year. They have developed an OBD Personal Flashing tool for tuning both ECU and TCU, however they weren’t able to do the BOSCH MQB DQ500 TCU yet.

A few weeks ago, they confirmed they were able to do their TCU tune over the OBD Personal Flasher, so I selected their TVS Stage 2+ tune and purchased it over PayPal.

There are places like Harding Performance that offer the TVS/HP TCU tune locally via OBD flash, however, I wanted to have the Personal Flashing device so I could do this myself and revert to the stock TCU map if needed.

Just need to find some time to install the software, most probably over the new year break. I’ll do a vbox run also to see if there is any noticeable improvement on the 4.2 second 0-100 km/h run. Fingers crossed....I’ll post my review after.

                      • Very interested in this development. Make sure you have a decent battery charger/maintain your battery voltage when flashing ECUs as dropping voltage can cause corruption of the file (and potentially brick your ECU).

How much for the tool and TCU map?

The Personal Flasher is 149 euros and tune 660 euros.....Note I found out the hard way that I also have to pay gst and import duty...

With an IS38 you will be low 4s. So if that is your end goal I can confirm it’s been done. In terms of software and hardware, APR and REVO are tried and proven. REVO have their own IS38 hybrid called the IS38 ETR which claims 480 HP (they were struggling with traction and had trouble recording their 0-100km time) or they have a OEM IS38 tune like APR with similar results.

I spoke to Guy from Harding Performance a few weeks back and he was saying they were looking into the Tiguan 162 platform for OEM+ tunes and potentially even doing a IS38 Hybrid bolt on for it. It would be the Franken-Mumster V2, the original had a GTX2867R turbo on the EA888 Gen 1 engine (GTI mk6).

                            • Tiggy the Hybrid sounds impressive. Be interesting to hear once someone has gone down this path. Personally I’d like to stick with the APR pathway, it’s logical based on where my local tuner is and as you say it will be a 4 second car once I get to that stage which will more than meet my goal. It’s so easy to fall victim to the horsepower bug and I spent a lot of money in previous years when the STI was in its hey day. If I can get a super reliable Tig that when required can do those sort of sprints I will be more than happy. I learned in previous years that sooner or later your going to compromise daily driving, considering most of the time the car will be in comfort mode cruising and then turn into Hyde when I want it to will be awesome.

Based on what I have read your car drives like it should but you have the power there when you need it. If that’s the case then definitely it’s the cars pathway.

In 3-4 years I will track down a good 2nd hand RS3 and get the stage 1 APR flash tune and airbox, I have a few mates that have done this and the car is staggering.
                              Thanks for your help 👍
