Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I saw that you had problems with it. If I go ahead with Tig I will suss out the stock airbox before any decisions on the r600.

What are your thoughts on Adelaide tuning options and costs? Who tuned your car on the GW dyno? I read a few posts where you seemed to hint that despite your build being satisfying you now lean towards off the shelf APR path (German Auto seem decent).
R600 intake is no issues. It's just the silicon hoses. There's been a few tried and failed with various brands. I'd suggest test fitting any intake hose before handing over cash.

In terms of tuning options in Adelaide I still think the best option is Haines/Etuners Motorsport. The reason I say this is that my preference is to get my cars looked after at the one workshop and have them do all work on it. That way if there is ever an issue then you don't get into a finger pointing game. Plus he's happy to install parts that are supplied and/or ones that he supplies so it makes it easy to deal with. Also he does look after his good customers. Though I still have challenges getting hold of him at times as he's a single guy running a workshop.

My comments were really about whether going with a (comparatively) expensive TTE475 turbo was worth it for the extra 20-30kwaw and the slightly slower spool (3,300 vs. 3,000rpm).

Bang for buck the stock IS38 is where it's at. And certainly it would be a bit more responsive on the street. You really only get to feel the top end on WOT and realistically there are very few opportunities to really wind these cars out - legally at least.

So what you sacrifice and what you gain I'm a firm believer that the IS38 swap for a daily driven car is the way to go. Unless you just want to throw a ton of $ at the car and can get to use the extra top end grunt on a more regular basis I just don't think it's worth the ~$3k premium.

Also if you go with a stock IS38 then it does open up other off the shelf tuning options like APR/Revo/Superchips(???). In terms of one-stop-shop solutions in Adelaide the other places you can go is German Auto or Andrawos who both do APR. I think GA also does Racingline/OEM+ but the only downside with GA is that their servicing costs are right up there with dealer prices. So you'll pay a premium going down the GA path. I don't have a problem with them charging what they do as they have a busy workshop and limited space (even after the upgrade to the premises). They are good and have some pretty knowledgeable VW mechanics working there but you do pay for it.

Other option is Miro at MRL Automotive (forum sponsor) who I've also used for servicing in the past. Miro can also do tuning, however doesn't have a hoist/workshop so if you're looking for more than a stage 1 tune then you'll need to get parts fitted elsewhere and Miro to install the file. It's OK but it can get a bit messy.

Other local options are Spectune (Morpowa), RD Technik (AMPL Auto) or Underground Performance (Graham West) but then with all of these options you're left with the problem of where to take your car for servicing as these are not VW/Euro specialist workshops and other than loading the tune files on and running on a dyno that's probably where their skills/experience ends. They're not working on VW/Audi cars every day of the week so it's certainly not my first choice for servicing/parts install/diagnostic work.

Budget a little more for a new IS38 as for $1500 you only going to get a second hand one with unknown condition.. I tried this and got burned, others have had luck, went with the latest P version IS38 for a bit over 2k which comes with a warranty...

I stopped adding up all the costs of modifying all my cars a long time ago as the final numbers can be sometimes scary..

My R33 I added up all mods to 30k and then stopped as I did not want to know the final figure....

      • Hey everyone found a turbo 06K 145 874 G for sale, it's 1800 I believe it comes from 2018 MK7.5 with 20K on it. Is G revision good enough??

What should I look for when I go there to inspect it?

        Thanks

          • Hey team, I ended up buying IS38 - 06K145874G revision. It's second hand but low mileage and internals looked great too.

Basically my next step is to do Stage 3 this week so I will let you know on specs and costing.

Here are some pics of the turbo.

Great to hear, looking forward to stage 3, initially wanted to just do a simple JB4 tune but decided otherwise.

                    • So, my APR stage 3 is on. Car reflashed from Stage 1 to 3 with new APR dumppipe, APR intercooler, IS38 turbo (Rev F), Racingline R600 CAI, Racingline R600 intake hose, Racingline turbo delete and Racingline high flow turbo inlet. Also put an 034 rear swaybar on too for good measure.

Picked the car up on Friday afternoon and my initial thoughts were . . . . Dear God, what have I down. Lacklustre, laggy, seemed worse that just the Stage 1 - I was really disappointed. Put the car in the garage, turned the TV on, sulked and didn't drive the car all weekend. Didn't know how to justify to my wife where the money had gone. Couldn't justify it myself.

This morning, had to drive a short distance to drop something off and the car felt perkier. Then the CEL came on - brilliant. Rang Vince at North Shore HiTech and took it straight in. We ran some tests and the error code was the turbo waste gate controller solenoid. Did some checks - wouldn't you know it, the connector clip had popped off and the first error had occurred on Friday but the CEL only showed next time the car was started. So no waste gate control - yup that would explain it the awful performance.

Took it out again this afternoon. Holy &*^$(#*(^# - what an animal. Still got the grin on my face.

I was worried about lag with the bigger IS38 as I loved the response of the IS20 - shouldn't have worried. Power delivery is actually smoother than the IS20 with Stage 1 which had a tendency to snap on really hard around 2500rpm which sometimes unsettled the car. No such problem now. Power comes on noticeably from 1500rpm and feels strong as it builds past 300rpm. And wow - what a difference to the top end. The IS20 used to run out of puff after 4500rpm, but now it is still building as the tacho swings past 6000 rpm.

Revised initial impression is that this is a well balanced street car. Sufficiently responsive down low for day to day driving which sufficient top end to make one smile. Its got a nice snarl now when the foot is down, but I also love that it is still nice and quiet when just cruising around. The overrun crackle with the pops and bangs tune is pretty cool too.

Next thing is to get out the dragy and get some times out of it to see what it is actually doing. Hoping for a flat 4s to the 100 / and 12s for the quarter mile with launch control. Will have to take it to the Creek as well to see once restrictions are lifted.

Ecstatic with the performance. Also great having your tuner/mechanic only a few kms away - one of the reasons I decided to stick with APR and not go for a custom tune - the APR tuner is only a suburb away.

XForce Varex muffler & controller on the way.

Good work. I was going to go for a 550hp hybrid but happy I went with a P version IS38 instead.. Interested to see a dyno graph of your tune if you get one done to overlay with mine.

If I were in Melbourne I'd happily go to the dyno you use for a back to back comparison.

I'm aiming to get across to Silverwater Automative in the next few weeks for a dyno run so will post up when I've got it. I'll also do a few runs with the Dragy in the next few days to see what it says.

Regarding turbos, I originally wanted the Littco L380 which is essentially the IS38 with larger thrust bearings, thrust washers and 45mm compressor which is known to work well with the APR Stage 3 tune but there was no stock with Littco and none due for some time so I grabbed a Rev F spec from the UK. I'm also curious to see how the L380X works with the Stage 3 tune but initial info on this is not positive at this point (apparently the turbo responds really well to another custom tune, not the APR Stage 3 tune).

550hp sounds nice, but with the extra 200kg over the Golf I reckon the lag would be problematic for a responsive street car (and lets face it, the Tiggy is no track car!)

I had one installed on my TTE475. It's got volcanic rocks in it.
My main reason for getting it was for trying to keep as much heat out of the engine bay as possible after spirited drives.
I can't really say if it improves performance like some sites and videos suggest, because it was added when the turbo was fitted.

I think if you were tracking the car then there may be some benefits, however for just short squirts I don't think you would notice any difference.
