Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Looking at some of the TTE turbos on other TSI engines it looks really promising, if you are getting over 500NM consistently from 3000 to 7000 RPM the Tig will take beast mode to the next level.
Well it is technically an IS38 upgrade as it's using the IS38 housing.... but with upgraded internals.

One of the reasons that I got this turbo vs. a number of other options out there is that it starts making full boost/peak torque from ~3000rpm. There are quite a few other hybrid turbos out there that may make more power, however only really come on strong at 4,000rpm. I need this to be a drive-able daily and am willing to sacrifice a bit of top end for a fatter torque curve.

      • I wonder how much access custom tuners as such E Tuners have access to the ECU tables. Because if it's full access, you could promote earlier spool by increasing cam timing overlap. This essentially promotes much more torque down low by filling the cylinder with inert gas.

Say for example by default (making up numbers here based on JDM cars I tune) VAG could be doing 20 degrees advance on the intake cam and 10 degrees retard on the exhaust side with those numbers exponentially decaying as they reach peak torque of the motor which is say 3k or so. Now with a larger turbo you essentially shift the entire torque band to the right of the rpm. We hypothetically could increase the overlap by adding more advanced timing as well as exhaust retard and then slow decay those numbers a bit higher up on the rev band. Hopefully that would bring on the turbo much sooner as you're producing more exhaust gases to help spool up the turbo. Also there's lean spool and ignition retard to get turbos on too (but I'll keep that for another brain dump elsewhere as these motors have the beauty of full variable IN/EX cam timing control)

        • I’ll leave that to the tuning wizards but yes different tuning philosophies apply and different tuners will approach the job from slightly different angle depending on what they are looking to achieve (and possibly what they know).

Yeap it’s an IS38 on roids...what sort of power and TQ is achievable on this turbo? Is it as the name implies 475 HP. There are some awesome vids on the older TTE470 on golf r’s
and they are making good power and getting some great 0-100 times.

What supporting mods do TTE recommend ? Things like turbo muffler delete/IC/DP/spark plugs?

Yes TTE475 is the upgraded version of the TTE470 so I’m hoping for similar sorts of numbers.

There is a TTE535 but then you start pushing the envelope and run into reliability issues plus spool is quite a lot later so I think for general road use the TTE475 is the way to go.

Supporting mods required is intake, DP and intercooler. Others are optional.

              • A quick look at their turbo catalogue (photos) they're just simply milling out the housings and jamming in larger compressor wheels.

They don't list the exducer size of their compressor.

I’ve selected the turbo based on looking at a heap of dyno graphs for various manufacturers turbos.
Both outputs as well as spool rpms.

There’s a number of options out there. TTE470 is pretty tried and tested on MQB so I’m not doing anything too groundbreaking but not many people bolting this onto a Tig either...

Whatever an R can achieve you could easily get close to the same output, an engine is sometimes limited to the flow capacity of a turbo
Which we all know, these motors can flow quite a bit of air and make good power.

If only Haltech or Link or ViPec, etc. decided to make a full standalone for these cars, I would be tuning them.

Tuning software for these cars are so expensive and yet so primative.. they're all in HEX

Here’s a little teaser out of Russia. It’s the REVO hybrid IS38 on a Tiguan similar HP to the TTE475. The launch control is pretty nuts, explosive to the red line and wheel spin......

                      Tig stage 4 Launch Control

And another of the Tig vs an S3 stage 2, the Tig is a couple of hundred KG heavier so that might offset the power advantage:

I did look into Revo but there’s no real options in Adelaide for this plus generally you pay more for the big name tuner “packages” as you’re pretty much locked into using all their hardware. I get this as it means they can do the development once and then just roll it out with bolt on hardware and flash tunes.

Yes this is pretty much where I’m going to be at in a couple of months hopefully... not that I plan on doing 290km/hr down the highway.

                        • After plenty of research I've decided to go with Littco L450. Mainly due to the upgraded thrust bearings. I was never going to go a Hybrid, a stock is38 was fine but due to the price this made the most sense. I probably won't push it to its full potential, I'll be happy if I safely achieve ~ 230kw at the wheels. Time to organise the little bits a pieces now.

                            Hi,

Wow, nice one. There must have been a few New Years resolutions to get a turbo swap!

I’m not familiar with this brand, is it designed for 450 HP and what is the torque output ?

Which tuner are you going with?

Have you started collecting parts for the build?

Interesting that Littco compressor blade design is a 7 + 7 design and TTE is 6 + 6.

Which state are you from? I’ll add you to the first page, as I have been tracking IS38/turbo swaps for those that visit and contribute to the thread.

Shipping form the UK directly from Littco. Bang for buck considered I'm not chasing big power. More so wanted the reliability + stage 2 is38 power.
