I'm not sure why we are talking second hand private cars but for what it's worth the cheapest is a 5000km stock DSG car for $42k, which falls into the 'tell him he's dreaming' category in any case.

As for end of financial year sales, well naturally it's a great time to buy a car. Even in June 2010 at the height of Mk6 madness when wait times were over six months VW were still willing to flog you any stock they had with free on roads which at the time was a $4-5k freebie with 'no negotiation'.

In fact based on the hard line a lot of GTI buyers are facing from dealers here I'd suggest sales are no problem at all. They were definitely well ahead and pleasing VW the last time they were 'in the media'. There might be a reduction in GTI/R as a proportion of Golf sales but I think that reflects the great quality, standard kit and pricing of the lower models.. and the reluctance of buyers to be scared off by media/message board bias against VW product. Bet there is no mass hysteria because Hondas may suddenly catch on fire via faulty airbags..
This would be my experience too at this time.

Going to try and jump in a PP before EOFY. Will be interested to see how motivated dealers will be to move stock. First offer of the week was close but I'm going to go hard and see how I do.
Shame I can't find out who's a little low on their sales for the month/ quarter...

Good luck! I secured my PP last week for what I feel like was a decent price with drivers assist. I love the stock interior of the PP and prefer it over the leather. Looking forward to getting into my first VW.

          • You'll be very lucky to get any EOFY specials on the performance models, GTI, Performance or R. They continue to sell themselves unfortunately. I looked at a manual GTI with some options Nd it was going to be a factory build ie 6 months. Lucky that my dealer had a Performance with leather and Driver Assist. Qualified for a corporate discount. Just have to sell the Merc now!

              • I would have preferred the Performance tartan with alcantara. Beautiful. Save $3000 and it's actually only "partial" leather anyway. In the end I thought I won't have to wait for a car. It will be my 3rd GTI with leather and I keep saying "get the tartan next time!" Oh well at least it will keep my wife happy! She loves the heated seats! They are kind of nice I suppose.

How does the corporate discount work? My wife is a chartered accountant would she qualify?

The first price I have gotten was close, they only have to move a a few k and it's done.
The one I'm looking at is the same spec as irossiter

                  • Yes ICAA membership qualifies.

The corp discount has come down a lot on the Mk7, it was around $2k on my quote which equated to $1k off delivery and $1k off list price. As outlined elsewhere however I was able to gain a significant discount above this figure regardless. Seems like some dealers are not willing to do this though so shop around and/or look interstate. Of course this may not help of you're trying to do an eofys deal.

                    • You'd have to check with the dealer. I received a corporate plus rate so $3000 off before negotiations. At least I get some benefit for my $800 a year AMA membership Don't seem to get much else! Definitely look around and particularly interstate. Don't believe the dealer if they say they can't find a car. I found a GTI for my dad 30km away from our local dealer. Sometimes a dealer won't swap cars either because they know they have a car in demand. I think that's quite reasonable.

                      • Assuming I find a dealer (reputable) interstate. Next question, how do I get the brand new vehicle over to my side? how about the turnover process normally done by the new vehicle salesperson onto myself, the customer?

I forgot there was a plus discount, I haven't seen anyone get a higher corporate rate on the Mk7 but feel free to chip in if you have. As a comparison the standard (only?) rate on the Mk6 was almost $4k from memory.. I think it may have been a percentage then.

I'd never thought of my membership paying for itself that way - good point.

As for VW dealer swaps, good luck, I don't doubt they happen but they're pretty rare, particularly for anything in demand as suggested. My dealer certainly didn't even go looking despite my willingness to buy pretty much any color or certain options, my only stipulation was DSG. Then again given the deal was sweet in the end, I didn't mind.

Interstate dealers will be happy to do deals, I've almost ended up helping a couple of people myself, but you do need to factor in transport or a decent drive home.

                          • So she qualifies. Thanks guys. Am I correct in that all she needs then is a letter from her employer? What does it need to state?

                            • I found my dealer was OK to swap what they had in stock for the exact spec I wanted. They usually cannot just get one from another dealer unless they can give something back that the other dealer would be able to shift easily. Also if you are east coast and they find a car in Perth it is pretty much no way you will get that car. As transport is a killer and Perth doesn't get as many cars they don't like to give them up.

Most dealers are happy to organise the transport. Not sure how the handover is dealt with, you'd pretty much be on your own - I'm guessing most people who organise interstate purchases are 'advanced' buyers who don't need the handover, although I am unsure what happens if the car is delivered with a mark/scratch.

My dealer just rang the ICAA with my details for confirmation, again each dealer may have different procedures - although I'd suggest they'd want a letter/advice from the body, not employer.

True, if one dealer had a stock white car and another had a stock CSG then I'm sure a swap would be possible. However as you say, if it's harder to move (eg. a fully loaded black GTI) then I doubt anyone would take it on. Again I remember back to 2010 and the fact dealers wouldn't even swap a DSG for a manual as the DSGs were a lot harder to find in stock. Funnily enough that situation seems reversed where manuals are now harder to find.

Incidentally I'm not criticising a fully loaded black GTI, it's just a fact that shifting a basic white GTI will be a lot easier.
