Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • By all accounts the ride isn't bad on the 19s, I just had no desire to be on them, particularly in that design. I also had no need for the PP as I won't be tracking the car, and don't drive on unlit roads so was ok to skip the xenons. I've got a sunroof on our other car, and had it on previous cars and must admit I rarely use them. Ergo the stock GTI was a no-brainer for me.. but.. I should get some choice if I want these things. The lack of sunroof and manual options on the PP is a very odd choice indeed..

As for Discover Pro.. I get that decision due to cost. Knowing it would have added $1,500-$2,000 to the price is a definite no from me, no matter how horrible the current system is.

I'm sure you can go add a sunroof but it won't look like the panoramic roof (I assuming it won't?) and won't add any value to the car, only detract. Unless you really want it and will use it regularly I'd just live without it.

Besides those funds can be used for a good set of lighter weight wheels to add some more P to the PP.

    • Yeah I didn't find the ride to be too bad on the 19's. In fact I was very surprised. Made a mockery of the shizer ride on the 18's in my Merc. The R was still way better than the Merc as well. I'm not a huge fan of the PP wheel design either but they're growing on me. Maybe some VW Motorsport 18's would suit. And yes I'd assume they'd be lighter and offset the added weight of the tricky diff.
I'd have to see if they could fit the VW pano roof, otherwise it would look very aftermarket. I really do love my sunroofs unfortunately! Even if it's just to let more light into the cabin.

      • I originally hated the Santiagos; now I just dislike them. Per the wheel thread I've seen a whole batch of German cars running lowered springs and suddenly the Santiagos start to look ok. Their weight seems to be at opposites with the PP thing though, as you suggested I'd be inclined for a complementary set of aftermarket wheels - the Motorsports aren't bad but still a bit heavier; their are some nice lighter weight options in the wheel thread and a couple do look OEM, particularly if finished off with a VW centre cap (if that's your goal).

Always worth the research if you're super keen on the roof but I suspect it may be a disappointing result. Be good to see any options you do come across though that are 'passable'.

        • Having investigated adding a sunroof to our other car, a VE Sportwagon, eventually the dealer showed me a factory bulletin outlawing add-on sunroofs as the car would no longer meet ADRs.

I think in this modern age of cars that are designed cm by cm to be crashworthy, this pattern will apply to most new cars.

          • Thanks. That's exactly what I was worried about with the add on sunroofs these days.

Wait, did I miss something? Is the standard Gti no longer able to be optioned with xenons? So if you wanted a sunroof and xenons you'd be forced to pay up for an R? Surely this will cost VW sales. Also while I'm on here, anyone else finding the standard satnav unusable at times? The resolution and road detail is dismal and the words "road" and "Sydney" can't even be pronounced properly. Sometimes I have random words thrown into an instruction like "follow the road worm for another 2 kilometres" I really don't think this is something we should have to accept - anyone else followed this up with VW?

Correct - MY15 changes for the Australian models, there's full details in that thread.

The satnav is a horrible little unit, about the only people who wont hate it might be a first time user who has never had a screen before. Fortunately I don't really use it much as I'm in Adelaide and, well, it's easy enough to get around. It's possible I may be moving however, and that's when a much nicer unit would be a lot more useful.

I haven't been game to try the word instructions after reading all the complaints on here.

                    • Certainly going to miss the Merc sat nav and voice control when I get rid of it. The VW one is a bit embarrassing really. Screen resolution is terrible as well. Glad I didn't throw out my old Garmin! Has anyone paid the $400 upgrade to obtain voice control in the Golf? I'm weighing up whether it would be worth it. If it's like the Audi it's rubbish. Have to spell out street names and still can't understand you. Dad has a new S3

That would probably be me, coming off a Mk5 Golf, fitted with a RCD300 unit, which has a small back and white screen, displaying only AM/FM radio stations, but it does have a 6-disc CD changer, which has sadly for me been dropped on the Mk7 Golf.

Have you tried an accent, like 'taken me to vork at zee schtore'?

With apologies to any Germans, anyone who knows me knows I am a fan of many things German!

I don't think she is a German. Firstly I thought she is from New Zealand then South Africa. After a while I got used to it and occasionally give her a "compliment".
At one stage I chose American from the menu and all I got was American dialect but still the same appalling pronunciation of the streets and numbers.
This is not up to a German pedantic mentality and a car with many titles, one of them being World Car Of The Year. I also believe that someone from Wolfsburg is reading owners comments on various forums around the world and somehow am surprised that there is no action on this from them. In Australia alone there are thousands of complaints about this and yet nothing was done.

                              • I guess they don't do anything because once people find out they already own the car. It probably doesn't lose them any sales. That's the bottom line.
