  • Hi Don,

Thanks again, the car is going back to the dealer tomorrow, anything else I should be asking for from them, The car comes out of its 3 year warranty next week so it might be my last chance to pin VW down at their cost.

    Cheers

Chris: When I had my last warranty period service for my MY13 mk7 a few months ago, I also complained about DSG shudder - With not much persuasion at all, the dealer agreed to install a complete clutch-pack at VW's cost - very nice indeed (about $2,500 job)!!

If you're having clutch shudder issues, you need to raise it with the dealer immediately, and ask that the clutch packs be replaced under warranty. As long as the dealer notes that the fault was reported prior to the expiration of your warranty then it's a pre-existing condition and will be covered under warranty, even if the work can't be completed before the expiry date.

        • MK 7 Questions

Have recently updated my VW from a 2006 MK5 Sportline TDi DSG to a MY14, 2013 MK 7 Highline TDi DSG Golf.
I have some questions that I have not found answers to, can anyone point me in the correct direction.

1: After driving the car sometimes in hot weather and stop either at home or the shops, the high speed fans circulate for about 5 mins (this doesn't happen all the time). I have read that this is to help cool the turbo, is this correct ( the MK 5 didn't do it)

2: The DSG in the MK7 feels sloshy, it sometimes does not select the best gear for the situation and will step down a cog if idling down a hill, whereas the MK 5 always selected the optimum gear for a crisp take-off if required. Is there a setting I can change through the VCDS?

3: Has someone got a link to a printable service schedule?

4: Anyone know of a good shop for wheel alignments on the northside of Brisbane as I am unable to do my own nowdays.

5: Are the rear doortrims ment to have a "glowstrip" like the front door trims when the lights are on at night?

          Thanks in advance

Scruff_dog: Hi and congratulations on your new purchase. I think that I can comment on some of your questions - hopefully others will do the same:

Question 1: Sounds like perfectly normal behavior. But, the "high speed fans" will be cooling the general radiator fluid, not the turbo charger directly. The turbo has a separate system that uses what VW calls the Charge air cooling pump - V188. The same coolant is used from the radiator, but V188 (which is an electric pump) specifically targets heat from the turbo - so there is an indirect connection to the "high speed fans" via heating of the radiator fluid (I guess). You can often hear the turbo pump operating when you turn-off the ignition - it sounds like a high-pitched squeal!. It will operate for a short period of time until the threshold temperature is achieved.

Question 2: It is possible to "reset" the DSG gearbox with VCDS (it's in "basic settings" in the control module @ address hex02), but your description sounds perfectly normal for a mk7 - the down hill behavior sound like the gearbox is providing engine braking assistance for the car. Perhaps this aspect of the gear-box behavior is accentuated in a mk7 because it uses "recuperation" -which increases the voltage to the alternator whenever the car is braking- not sure if your previous car had this. Also not sure about your "sloshy" description!

            Question 3: Google search!

Question 4: I'm not in Brisbane - alas

Question 5 : Not familiar with your particular model, but my mk7 doesn't have the strips on the rear doors !

I have a MY16 Golf R and it only has the illuminated door trims in the front of the car.

              • Hi Don,

I received the diagnostics report today, everything was fine, the service guys tried to recreate the shudder from the DSG by doing hill starts on a steep hill, there were no further signs of issues. So I have accepted the car, I have 2 more years to go on the extended DSG warranty so I will see how things go. Thanks again for the advice.

                • Hi all
A new member and need a quick question answer.
I'm from Adelaide and will be doing a lot of driving from Boxing Day to Broken hill then on to Dubbo then back via Hay and extra driving..
anybody suggest a bonnet protector that I can get before then?
Also any headlight protection or other options I should consider to protect the front of the car from bugs etc??

Looking a some quick options if anybody can help.

                  Thanks

                  • You are definitely going to need it, I'm a rep driving out through Dubbo and surrounds quarterly, I'm up for a big respray...

I'm curious as well. Ive looked into car bras but heard they can scratch the paint if dirt gets trapped underneath them. I've Been told you can get a clear wrap put on and it works just as good.

                    • The other thing you might look at is bug protection for the radiator air-con fins etc.
I recently did Brisbane Townsville through swarms of butterflies. Had to stop several times just to clean the windscreen, the washer- wipers couldn't cope.
So I expected to see fins clogged, but a former owner of the Mk 3 had fitted 5mm plastic mesh inside everything around the bar and grille, not fancy, it just sits there,- the car used to do Adelaide to Broken Hill trips I'm told, - so was a quick cleanup.

Get some of the Blue masking tape (the one that is designed to be outdoors and come off easily and mask the front off. Dont forget the mirrors & leading edge of the roof and the wheel spray area behind the tyres.

Long term get some clear film applied.

Get some fly wire and cable tie it over the grilles

                            Hi Brad

                            Thanks for your help..

I'll definitely look at fly wire.. I'll just have to see what areas on the golf that'll need it.. then work out some ideas..

The tapes a great suggestion... may I ask what sort of tape??
Does it have to be blue?? It looks nice on your motor. But my golf just happens to be black. [emoji17].
Im assuming I find something at one of the hardware stores!
Would it leave too much residue once taken off???

                            • Also would the standard VW headlight protectors be ok?? The car's going in for a service on Wednesday and I can get some fitted.

                              • I don't use headlight protectors. Headlights are plastic anyway.
I did Syd-Bkn Hill - Syd last month and if you don't tailgate, your headlights should be OK.

                                The image isn't my car.

The colour is the colour. Blue is 14 day removal. Green is 5 day. Gold is 60 day.

Ideally you'd get a clear wrap but that won't be happening 3 days out from christmas.
