Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Got in the car this evening and my media unit had somehow lost all the preset radio stations. Ive reset them all but now it won't let me save radio station logos. Anyone else experienced anything like this?

    • Been out twice since the last post and the radio has lost preset stations on both occasions. Got the car Monday, great start to ownership!

Might be worth doing a hard reset on media until, hold down the on/off bottom until you see the unit restart .. might be worth a go.

            • New MY16 Highline - what is this rattle?

Hi, I a very subtle rattle coming from the engine area, only under acceleration, in a new 110 TSI Golf. Exactly the same as this video (not mine) from someone else's Golf in 2014. Any ideas? https://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=JEXY0OwVmSg

              Thanks

              • Whoops the link was skipped too far ahead in the video, sorry here is the right one https://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=JEXY0OwVmSg could this be the fuel line rattle?

                • Just had an interesting situation. I was stopped on a steep ramp (parking garage exit) and had to exit the car to punch in my exit code as my windows have been recently tinted. Auto hold kicked in so I opened the door, entered my code, closed the door and accelerated. Nothing. The car lurched like it wanted to take off, but the auto hold wouldn't disengage. Nervous about the boom coming down and locking me in, I frantically pressed the auto hold button but still nothing Happened. Eventually I put my foot down hard(ish) and auto hold finally disengaged and I left a nice thick set of black lines up the formerly clean painted ramp.

Any reason it would have done this? A combination of the ramp grade, speed at which I closed the door and then tried take off perhaps?

Doesn't the handbrake automatically engage when you open a door? The "lurch" you describe sounds like what I imagine any car would do while trying to drive with the handbrake on. Would a flick of the handbrake switch have saved the day?

Normally I would say yes, however the handbrake always disengages as soon as I put my foot on the gas. Or at least that's how it's behaved so far? Perhaps it behaves differently when you:

                        a) Get in the car, start the car and then drive away

                        compared to

                        b) car is running, open the door, shut the door, then drive away (or try to).

It seems there is a difference between the e-brake in those two scenarios?

I found out that by starting the car, (& not realising the drivers door wasn't closed), that by putting foot on accelerator, a warning appears on the MFD to 'release the handbrake'.

I wasn't sure why it didn't take off until I noticed I'd forgotten to shut the drivers door, via the symbol on the MFD.

Upon closing the door, & pressing the accelerator, the handbrake automatically released, as per normal.

                          • Mattaus,
This is a normal behaviour, coded on purpose by VW. This is also why quite a few changed the coding to allow one to open the door. I have seen quite a few run into this issue...

                            • Thanks Ralfi and Tim. Odd, I swear the door was shut. So maybe you must press the ebrake button to get going again if you open the door with the ebrake on?

                              • 110tsi vs 110tdi

I'm considering upgrading my golf, this being my first auto I'm leaning toward the diesel as it uses the wet clutch 6 speed DSG which from my research has less issues, though I'd probably prefer a petrol car! Is that reason enough to choose a diesel? Or am I worrying about nothing with the petrol 7 speed DSG
