Mk7 Golf TSI & TDI - Observations and Questions

I'm considering upgrading my golf, this being my first auto I'm leaning toward the diesel as it uses the wet clutch 6 speed DSG which from my research has less issues, though I'd probably prefer a petrol car! Is that reason enough to choose a diesel? Or am I worrying about nothing with the petrol 7 speed DSG

I have a 103tsi with 7 speed DSG. No issues so far, haven't heard of any issues either.

I was also considering the diesel at the start, but the upfront premium + service cost of diesel + wet clutch DSG drove me towards petrol. (Hopefully you are aware that the DSG oil in the 6 speed DSG costs an arm and leg to replace, 7 speed is a dry clutch. No oil)

Buy a GTI DSG? or stick with manual?

7 speed seems a good box to stay away from. Some people have no problems, others a world of hurt. Some people just don't have a clue & don't even realise that the shuddering or poor changes aren't normal.

For somebody to say they've never heard of any issues with the DSG7 only means they've had there fingers in their ears.

Yes, 7 speed had issues in the MK6, they were fixed. Haven't heard any wide spread issue with the 7 speed in MK7s. <- That clear enough for you?

Given the OP was looking at purchasing a MK7 TSI Golf, I didn't think it was necessary to dig up old wounds.

Your concerns are well founded. The mass recall they had was well publicised and well discussed on all the forums.

But ultimately, it's a personal choice. Buying the diesel will buy you peace of mind, at a cost to purchase price and service cost.

When I bought mine, I was concerned by the reliability of the 7 speed too. But my research through the forums and long term reviews had only uncovered a handful of complaints about the 7 speed in mk7. Most were dealt with by the dealers to the owners satisfaction. It was by no means, wide spread. (IMO, there are always going to be lemons doesn't matter what car you buy, and these are most visible through forums as is the nature with online forums.) end of the day, VW would have sold 10s of thousands of Mk7 Golfs with the 7 speed DSG in them. If there are only a handful of complaints on forums, well that's a risk I can accept

You should test drive both Tdi and tsi if you get a chance, while the 6&7 DSGs are similar in behaviour, they each have their own little quirks. Nothing to be concerned about, will just take some getting used to (specially if you currently drive a manual, or a traditional automatic)

Also, try to schedule an additional test drive in peak hour traffic so you get to experience stop start traffic with the DSG

Hi all,

I noticed this yesterday and again today. When auto stop/start is enabled, my engine actually shuts down before I come to a complete stop. So I can be rolling (albeit slowly and about to stop) and the engine will cut. That's not a problem. What I see as the problem is that power steering is also disabled when the engine shuts down. I think this is inherently dangerous. I made a note of it yesterday when I nearly stopped at an intersection but then accelerated to turn the corner. The engine shut off (annoying but expected) but the steering wheel locked mid turn as well. It all came to life again (engine and steering) with the usual delay but because the car had never stopped rolling and the steering wheel would not turn for that brief moment, I ended up taking a much wider turn than anticipated and nearly collected a car parked on the other side of the road!

Is the power steering supposed to disable with the stop/start system? Or have I got a gremlin?

Thanks for your detailed response, may I ask how old your Mk7 is and how many km?

I have 2.

The MY15 TSI was bought in June. It's just coming up to 10k.

We also have a MY13 TDI that's coming up to 20k.

My power steering is disabled when using the stop/start system. I've also experienced it cutting out before coming to a complete stop.

Good to know, but at the same time worried because I don't think it's very safe. Then again I have not heard of any incidents actually occurring as a result of this.

Mechanic recommended against getting TSI engine... need some advice

My Golf MkV 2.0 TDI (2006) is almost due for replacement timing belt, and so I thought I'd look into replacing it with a new Mk 7. However, my mechanic recommended that I don't get anything with a TSI engine, as in his opinion the engines are just working way too hard, and he is seeing a lot of problems come into the workshop across the range of TSI engines. Particularly because I don't drive much (only done 67,000km in this car) and only short distances when I do, I haven't had good value out of the 2.0 TDI (although I've enjoyed driving it). I was thinking of moving to a new 110TSI Highline Petrol (on the face of it looks great value at $33,990 with the discount offer around at the moment). But the mechanic's got me rethinking this now, so I wondered what other people's experiences are with the TSI engines? Or do I need to be more specific and avoid TSI engines with timing chains? Thanks for any advice.

Short distances and modern diesels don't go well together.

Current crop of petrol engines are OK.

I have 2 1.4TSI engines. One from 2007 with 126k on the clock and one from 2014 with 15k on the clock. Both are perfectly fine and great engines.
