Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I have a 016 Golf with the discover media , that comes with CarPlay. When you press and hold the VC button on the steering wheel it activates SIRI. I didn't pay to have the VW Voice Control activated.

Yeah this is what happens when you have CarPlay active. The VC button engages when pressed but still get the error message on speedo. It works which is great but I can easily just say "Het Siri". I'd prefer there to be a mute button.

Fact of the matter is when an album has finished playing or even if I want to hit pause whilst GF is chatting to me, I could use this button and it would either jump to next album or would stop so my GF could continue chatting my ears off. Lol

Gotta be a way to code it to function like one???

I don't like to give up easy.

      • Well I have completely figured how to make the infotainment colours customizable with multiple colours that are changeable through the infotainment system. With my Passat R it also changes the colours in the digital dash. So stoked to get this sorted again.

Thanks recd. I knew the Siri part works, I was wondering if you could confirm single press functions as a mute button or not in MIB2.

The past few post are about this. The MIB1 doesn't have CarPlay thus no VC function. The MIB1 I believe will perform as a mute button.

I think we are getting our wires crossed.

MIB1: no Siri, but has dealer option to enable VC. If it's not active, then acts as mute button.

MIB2: has Siri, also has dealer option to enable VW VC. (Short press activates VW VC, long press for Siri)

What we are trying to work out with MIB2 is if VW VC is not activated, does a short press also work like a mute button like it did on MIB1. That's your original question right?

We know your MIB2 doesn't work as a mute button, I was asking the previous poster to confirm his car behaves the same as yours to get a larger sample pool.

                Fair call.

For me a long press is no different to a short press. It will always activate Siri when CarPlay is activated. An error will display long or short press regardless if CarPlay is activated as well.

No mute function at any point.

I fear anyone with the MIB2 will no longer have this feature. Unless there is coding to disable the Siri VC.

                We need a coding guru

                  Ahh ok, I understand now.

Just for your information, on my MIB1, I also get the stupid error message on the MFD, but it mutes my audio, so I don't mind.

As a side note, have you tried holding the volume down switch? Not perfect but should achieve similar results?

Yeah I have tried that but it's annoying because for one you can't achieve the same volume once you bring it back up again. Holding down is easy coz it just turns off but holding it back up + means I have to time it so it doesn't start peaking loud music.

Also I have a work phone that isn't Bluetoothed to my stereo and sometimes I might get a call. A quick mute unmute I can check if it's ringing or not.

                    • To those who know about VCDS, can I please ask 2 questions?

                      1. With having a JB1/JB4 on the car, if I do a VCDS scan, it is supposed to report no faults if it's all running well?

                      2. I did a scan and it worked normally. Then I did it again and it produced lots of errors:

A lot of the erros said:

                      U1121 00 [009] - Missing Message

                      What does this mean?

                      • ^^^^ Difficult to be precise about what has happened with just the summary autoscan report. What are the symptoms on the car? What is the fault frequency? Have you tried removing the tick from "aggressive mode" on the auto-scan page on VCDS software? Try bulk clearing the errors and re-scan.

If the DTCs are persistent, the BCM might be worth investigating because of its central role.

Simple way to find-out if it's genuine - simply download the latest RT software and connect the cable to the laptop. If it's genuine, the firmware in the dongle will need to be updated to be compatible with the latest software and everything should be OK. But you should be aware that RT no longer sells these cables (they are based on a design that's over 20 years old - apparently).

Of course it the cable in the picture is a fake - then I would suggest that you chuck-it in the bin because it's rubbish and that's where it rightly belongs (and because after linking it with the latest RT software- it will no longer be usable)!

the cable was missing. I've finally found it in an old drawer... what do you mean is that if I run the updater program it will disable the cable if it's not ross?

also, do you know how to change the main page in the CAR menu item to always start in Fuel Economy page, not status? I don't use the status page..

Gaucho: I think that I have found your cable:

And guess what? You have participated-in and supported the despicable market for IP theft because:

My suggestion is not to update the software, but instead - immediately connect the cable to your car and poll the MIB controller @ address hex5F - then make a booking with your dealer (you will need it!)
