Just s quick question regarding this voice control. I have the button and it mutes and pauses, when asking vw if I can have VC installed they said no, is this correct?

Reedy: Hi. My understanding is that the default status of mk7's sold in Australia is for them NOT to have VC activated -your observation that the button "mutes and pauses" strongly supports this.
Retrofitted VC is what's called "SWAP" (Software as Product) - so it needs an activation code that is tailored to your car's VIN (AFAIK)
As I said in my Vortex post, I managed to get VC installed by VW at no additional cost after I purchased my car - it took a long time and much negotiation (read "argument") with the "Customer (don't) Care" staff @ VW Aust, but eventually they agreed. However, I consider the exercise to be a waste-of-time, because I don't believe that I have used VC more than a few times in the 3 x years that I have had the vehicle - it's an interesting novelty, but I certainly wouldn't pay money to have VC installed (IMO). I think from memory that it was around $400 to get the dealer to install VC - outrageous!!

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.
Bassik: Of course you can use OBD11 - see below (scroll down to the very end of the screen after you select coding on the 5 F Module)
If you can't get to my screenshot - simply post-up the code string for the 5F module, and I will calculate the Byte/Bit value
Don
Hey Don. For the life of me can't get to this screen your showing?
Where do I go?
I've select central electronics and then coding but everything's in German. Even tho it's in English for the settings. I can't see any bytes for anything.
Basik: OK, that's why you were getting the error message to install the activation code - because the 5F module was told that VC was installed (via the code-string setting), but the activation code wasn't entered - makes sense now!
Strange that you still don't have mute after deactivating the Byte/Bit - have you tried resetting the MIBB unit after the change ? It's done like this:
With the MIB unit turned-on press down the ON/OFF knob until the MIB unit switches-off AND keep holding the ON/OFF knob down until the unit turns-on again (about 10 seconds).
Then try the VC button(s) again

Yeah ok so I tried that and nothing changed still get the error message.
Once I made it deactivated this error has now gone but still get the top message.
Bassik- I never like to give-up without a solution, but I'm running out of options.
I'm trying to understand why this problem has arisen on your car? The fact that the default value for Byte 24 was set is unusual for a mk7 that came factory fitted without VC. Plus, I consider myself to be fairly active in the mk7 forums and your problem is relatively unique. What's the history of the car?
Don
PS: Long shot - but try resetting to factory settings through the MENU option

Honestly couldn't tell you the history. It's the 40th Years ED and was bought only 2 weeks ago. I got the OBDeleven straight away. Could it be that it's the 40th?
If I have the option to activate with a code from VW does that mean that I have the VC installed but just not activated, thus meaning I do have it installed from factory.
I like your determination because from reading on several forums I can confirm owners do in fact have the VC functioning as a mute button.

Don,
Could this be due to the fact that MIB 1 (what you and I have) behaves different to MIB2?
I can't remember how I came to this conclusion (whether it was the loaner VW gave me that has MIB2, or through reading forum posts), but I had the impression that MIB2 voice control button didn't function as a mute button like it did with MIB1?

Hi,
Can I ask what the differences are between MIB1 and 2. Is this the 5" version the old mk7 pre MY16s had?

Yup, that's one of the differences. MIB 2 also has way higher resolution and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
So this might be the culprit. One would think MIB2 would inherit the same functionalities as MIB1 but maybe having CarPlay and Siri would mean this VC button would in fact cater to that Siri feature when CarPlay is active???

If you press and hold the button, I believe this activates Siri.
Can anyone else with MIB2 confirm my potentially misguided assumptions?
