Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Hi Koe, that is one hell of a blunder from Volkswagen to fit 225/35 R19 88Y instead of a 235/35 R19 91Y tyres. I presume your "illegal tyres" comment is in reference to the load rating being below the minimum value. What is South Yarra Volkswagen doing to correct the problem?

Yup. Illegal load rating. Too narrow. Stretched onto rim. All great things as far as insurance, popo's, ADR etc go.

I'm pushing for ALOT. And after the rim debacle in QLD, I'm sure VW will be very accommodating... Stay tuned.

if the tyre placard says 235 35 19 & 92 min load rating (highly likely), by all rights VW should replace yours with the correct size and load rating.

i have only seen the pzero 225 35 19 fitted onto the GTI PP and none on all of the mk7 R's i have seen in Brisbane.

            • The Golf GTI PP comes with 225/35 R19 tyres on a 7.5 inch rim.
I wonder if the dealer swapped tyres from a GTI PP they had in stock as part of a deal?

Nope. All GTI PP have proper load ratings. Not the 88y these have.

Check the tyre placard on the car. Any replacement tyre fitted to the vehicle must be equal to, or greater than, the lowest rated tyre on the placard.

                  Eg a Mk 6 Golf R has 225/40R 18 with a 92 load rating, or a 235/35R19 with a 91 load rating.

The GTI Performance must have a 225/35R19 with an 88 on its placard because that's what Carsales says they come with. Also, it has a 7.5" wide wheel and you can't put a 235/35R19 on a 7.5". You can put a 225/35R19 on an 8" though. The tyre to wheel width rules are international.

DrK's car obviously slipped out of the factory with GTI Performance tyres on it. Naughty, unless VW have an 88 rated tyre on the Mk7 R placard. I doubt they do.

I've never seen a 225/35R19 higher than 88. They are either 84 or 88. Tire rack certainly don't sell any. What does the GTI PP placard say?

The cars on a Carsales have 88s on them in the photos. The placard must have 88. VW couldn't have f$$ked up to that extent. If they have then Fairfax will ream them. It'll make the Melissa Ryan case look like a storm in a tea cup...

The tyre placard on the GTI-PP reads:

                        225/45 R17 91W
                        225/40 R18 92Y

While it's probably excusable for the average customer to not notice (I'm not saying you're average Koe - far from it!), it's completely inexcusable for the car to pass through Volkswagen QC in Germany, and to add further embarrassment, it was not picked up during predelivery. This just reinforces the fact that predelivery involves nothing more than a cursory inspection, cleaning and registering of the vehicle.

Indeed it has. My understanding is that Pirelli P Zero's are fitted to the GTI-PP, while Bridgestone Potenza RE050A's are fitted to the R.
