Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Making the inner LED lights operate as brake lights does work on Australian mk7s, I did it to my mate's 7R on the weekend. They're so bright at night now!

Happy to help others in Brisbane also.

This and other tweaks are a good excuse to justify purchasing a genuine VCDS cable.
Keep us posted on the brake lights. Must do!

Andrew7, do you have an update on your Opti-Coat application that you can share with us? Was it everything you expected or hoped for, and would recommend to all forum members? The photo certainly leaves me in awe of the paintwork's reflective qualities.

        • Sure, Mikey, I'm now about 3 weeks post Opticoat and we've had a good amount of rain and bad weather to make a mess of my R and put the Opticoat to the test! The biggest plus I can note is that car duco looks fantastic after a good rain storm, its almost as if the rain "washes" the car and the car duco looks flawless afterward (provided you're not driving around in it in which case grime, dirt etc build up on the back due to the Golf hatch design). Similarly, if I dont have time to properly wash the R a quick hose down produces a similar result. Post wash (havent applied wax or afterwash gloss products yet) the paintwork gleams/pops (Dan's Garage did a fantastic paint correction prior to Opticoat fixing numerous swirls and scratches so that was key to the great end result, I think this is particularly important for cars with darker paint such as mine Lapiz Blue, black, Lg etc). In summary, money well spent, highly recomend.

On a side note about to hit 1,000km and a very happy camper with the MK7 R, just a great all rounder, smooth on the road when you're cruising, angry and snarly when you boot it

          • What sort of costs are we talking about for a detailer to apply an Opticoat protection?

Also why do they offer a lifetime warranty on the opticoat applied to new cars but only 5 years on non-new cars that have the opticoat applied? Surely the opticoat is the same on a non-new car as it is on a new car? It's the opticoat they are warranting not the paintwork on the car? Seems rather odd to me?

I'll let Opti-Coat customers talk about prices they paid, but on the issue of warranty, I've been advised by one of their authorised dealers not to bother with any warranty. They guarentee the quality of the product and its application as part of the original costs to their customers. The lifetime warranty probably wouldn't cover normal wear and tear over an extended period anyway.

Prices range from around $400 to $1000 based on what I've read on here for minor paint correction and opticoat treatment.

Mikey1 is spot on with his summary on warranty - save the cash.

As my car is a daily I expect a few marks here and there so figured I'd look at a full detail, correction and re-application down the track if need be.

                • Dave at Reflect Effect told me the lifetime warranty only applies if you have a yearly check up with an authorised OptiCoat dealer where they wash and inspect, and reapply in areas if necessary (Dave said he charges $45).

Over time it'd probably add up to the cost of a new application anyway and, if you happen to keep the car 10 years +, I'm not sure you'd care by then.

Hey Guy, excited that you got your new golf R. Does this mean you can share with us a little of what to expect from APR stage1 for mk7 R? I know Dean in Melbourne is keen to start trying out the beta file
