Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Your money buys you a empty/blank "Bluefin" handcontroller and a CD that you install onto your computer. The CD gives you a program which lets your Bluefin communicate via your computer to the Superchips servers. The Bluefin handset serves as a tool to upload the Stage 1file and it also keeps your stock file on the handset should you need to change back.

The Bluefin handset does not give you access to modify the tune in any way (eg tweaking - and why would you want to unless you are a professional tuner). It simply allows you to switch between stock and the Superchips map.

It also allows you to do logging of data about the car such as error messages / throttle input / boost etc etc. The CD that comes with the handset has the Superchips program for your computer as well as PDF versions of the user guide. a printed user guide is also provided.

    Process:
    1) Connect Bluefin handset to OBD port and follow the on screen prompts to download your stock engine mapping (about 20 mins)
    2) Once the Bluefin handset confirms that the stock map has been uploaded successfully, remove it from the OBD port and connect it to your computer via the supplied USB cable
    3) Install the Superchips CD onto your PC, enter your personal details as well as the cars details (model / make and transmission type) and then press the "connect" button. Your file will now be sent to Superchips.
    4) You will receive a email to say that your new modified mapping file is available. Connect the Bluefin handset back up to your computer and download it via the Bluefin program. (about 20 mins)
    5) Connect the Bluefine handset back up to the cars OBD port and follow the on screen prompts to upload the new Superchips mapping to the car (about 20 minutes)
    6) Start her up and take it for a burn.

    • Thanks for the info mate. Reason I asked was because this page led me to believe it allowed for some variation but I guess they just mean that they'll send you a new map and you can upload it yourself.

        • I was so glad and relieved to read your comments on being underwhelmed with the Golf R performance. I made the mistake of noting my dissatisfaction on the forum with the car and got literally abused for knocking the Golf R. One moderator became very abusive and threatened a sanction, all I wanted to find out is why my Golf R didn't live up to expectations.

The Bluefin made all the difference, like you, I am now much happer with the car.

I bought the Bluefin from GCcorp and did have a few little hassles with the downloading of the remap. Gerard was most helpful and obliging all the time to sort the problem.

No problem with the remap, problem was with the download speed of my computer at the time. Download was timed out and bluefin only allow one registered download so to get another I had to contact bluefin to allow my access. It happened a couple of times before I got it right. It was made worse by the time difference between UK and AUS, each time I tried was early morning AUS time, just before bluefin UK closed, I had to wait 12 hours before they could reset for the download.

Worth every cent, turned a just so so vehicle into a great car.

The car actually feels like its a turbo now rather than just feeling like a larger capacity naturally aspirated engine. Having owned 2x 200sx's over the past 8 years or so that were both lightly modified up to around 170rwkw - i was a bit underwhelmed with the Golf GTI and Golf R in standard trim.

                  • I wouldn't mind that, but then I think there are those that like convertibles and those who don't.

I have never understood the fascination of making a convertible with the lowest spec engine, why can't I have power AND no roof

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Mainly because most cars which were "regular cars" and then have "their roof cut off" lose all rigidity, therefore making them all twisty and wishy-washy when you put powerful engines in them. Even Aston Martins lose their feel in the convertible models. Crazy! Car needs to be built specifically as a convertible to then be high powered.

                      • That's fair I suppose... doesn't mean I'm not still eying off the Golf Convertible

Still working on them (I know, said this before), but been involved in technical discussions, even this morning - If it doesn't run right on all cars, they wont release it.
