I was in exactly the same situation as you DreamensioN, After having owned 2x 200sx's (an S14a and a S15) over the past 8 years i decided it was time to get something a bit more practical / less boy racer / grown up / sophisticated etc etc. Both my 200sx's were mildly modified up to around the 170rwkw mark and were pretty quick without being over the top.
I must admit that i was a little upset when i drove the demo R at the dealership - it didnt feel as brisk as a 2nd hand Audi S3 i had driven only a few weeks prior. The car is much more sure footed and confidence inspiring than the 200sx - but it just felt like a larger capacity 4 cylinder (say 2.4 litres) rather than a turbo. You have to remember that the Golf R is about 250-300kg heavier than a 200sx so its not quite as nimble.
I am very happy with the Golf, its MUCH better built than the Nissan, nice and quiet, smooth, very refined etc. And to be honest, a basic stage 1 remap will lift the power from the Aussie detuned level of 188kw/330nm to 230+kw / 420+nm, making it much more fun to drive.
