Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Guys,

I am being tempted to other cars... I was about to get the Golf R but I have been offered the Land Rover Evoque and Evolution X at cheaper price.. atleast where am located... How fast is the Evolution X compared to the Golf R with a Stage 1 APR? ive check the figures in spains website for EVO X SST and the 0-62mph (0-100km) is 6.3secs its the same model as you guys AU engine specs and same weight... now Golf 0-62mph is stated in there site as 5.5secs so is the Golf R faster ?! I havent experience any of the cars myself... any opinions are welcome

      Maybe. Maybe not.

Stock, older models and you get a maybe.

Man I was blown away by the insurance. So much pace for the little blue brick, refinement and gadgets.. And insurance was circa $1K!!

My WRX was $1500 odd so I am stoked considering this is worth another $20K.

So on the Pro list for me!

      You know it FAB_R!!

I hate to say it, but ADAMD private msgd me and told me one of his mates has a STG 1 GTI ( that's a standard GTI with only a tune for those unaware) and that was faster than his mates GTR.. And that GTR has 280Kilowatts at the wheels? (correct me ADAMD if I'm wrong with the numbers)

I'm not dogging him.. If he saw it he saw it. I can't wrong him there.

But the hopes are high for the Golfs boys!!

Best advice, go test drive both. They are two different cars, completely. Japanese vs Euro

EVO is faster. Golf is Nicer.

Insurance, resale, and luxury go the GOLF R.

All out Performance, go the EVO.

In saying that, 0-100 in 5.7 is enough for me and the golf always makes me happy.

Check out a Mitsuibishi website and see the performance gains there.

        Good luck!

Thats what am saying the performance figures dont match ... according to the figures the Golf R is faster... , yes I know the Evo X will probrally be less livable for daily driving and long journeys, but if its 4k cheaper in GBP ... makes me wonder if I could live with it.. Unfortunately I cant test drive the R here none availabe the dealers and checked spain.. but no luck anywhere close... the Evo X is the same story.. so i have buy based on what I have read, opinions and going through alot of forums hehe

Fair enough, but I really don't think the EVO will be unlivable for anyone who remotely appreciates motors.

Maybe the old EVO VI, or 22B STI are a bit hardcore, but the new cars really are so much softer than the old cars that had the stigma of being unlivable - (they also give todays cars their sports heritage.).

But ask any old schooler or purist and their first criticism of today's cars are they are so compromised for comfort.

So I would choose the car you like the most!

            • Definently test both. Sports suspension ain't what it used to be even ten years ago. My MY04 WRX with Sti suspension upgrade was fine and I did a shed load of highway kms in that. I would even go so far as to say that it was no worse than my golf r in normal mode running 19's

i have driven the Golf R32 and the EVO VII with some upgrades to 330bhp... that was very fast and wouldnt have been able to live with it daily especially on long trips, the Golf R32 was firm on 19s but i really didnt feel the interior quality of its plastics were outstanding, thats as close as I will get to something similar to compare... In regards to the Golf R would a stage 1 APR then put it on par with Evo X acceleration figures? I will try to get the dealer see if I can test drive both but I really doubt it :\ basically I can get the Evo X MR with leather seats and the whole works for around 33500GBP while the Golf R fully loaded would be 38000GBP.. I did see if they would give me a 2000GBP discount but they didn't seem to budge, I will try to persue them again. Also here we get 2 years warranty for the VW and 3 for the EVO X, ... Wish I could buy both cars ...

                • If sounds like you want outright pace, cause you are talking about acceleration figures! I think you need to get the EVO.

And if the R32s interior wasn't up to your expectations, (although I like the Rs more than the R32s - it is newer and looks better like most newer cars), then i would say get the EVO again.

The EVO VII inside had traces of the Mitsubishi Mirage hatch back. It was very low quality. You can't even remotely compare the interiors of the R32 and the EVO VII.

Then again the performance gap of the two was much wider than the current cars.

Do you want to save a buck as well?

But me, I would take the R. All day.

If it had read "Volkswagen R GmbH has fitted a TT-RS/RS3 driveline" then we'd be talking!

                        • I don't think it looks too bad, I guess it is different from the quite subtle golf R now which could be a good thing as most people here are spending ~$70k so I guess 'some' people would like to have their R look 'prettier'

Yes the EVO VII .... interior was a bit to harsh hehe made for the hardcore driver who didn't give a damn about interior and the ride wasn't comfortable at all.... Well I do really prefer the Golf R due to having APR nearby for a stage 1 / 2 upgrade later on although am sure I can find performance upgrades for Evo X from AMS but not close, yes am looking for something thats very faster from 0-100km but also livable... I do currently drive a 2007 honda legend, If I did have the money I would go for a Audi S4.. I love that car... At the end it all depends if the dealer will meet my budget in terms of the golf R because it is the best all rounder from what I gather reading. Hopefully the VW can meet a 5.5% discount!! :\

                            • I see a new trend with the MKVI range - Production Limited Editions that are all show only - No performance upgrades. Sign of the times? Audi reigning in VW (can't have a VW with the same performance as an equivalent Audi)?
