Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Corey, there is always a better sounding system out there, depending on budget.
I have a cousin with a $150k home theatre, I mean it is the absolute ducks nuts, projector was $25k, and it is the most unbelievable experience.
But is it 10 times better than a $15k system?
    hell no!

For me the base system is good enough.

    • And having built a $400,000 home theater system once (audio only in that budget, and unfortunately it wasn't mine), I understand completely.
But the Dynaudio is not $400k, $150k, or even $15k.

      It's only $1,500
For that money you're not going to get anything better by getting the stock system and upgrading afterwards.

So whilst I've no issue with anyone saying that the stock system is good enough for their needs, I do have issue with this, because it's simply not true:

Well corey, I don't wish to argue with you over the fact that $1500 is expensive to me for what you get. Which is the point i was making.
i also stated that I understood those who wished to spend the extra as everyones tastes are different.
Otherwise we would all be driving the same colour/spec vehicles.

        Move on.

Great Dave's think alike hehe? It might only be $1500 but I didn't see the point. I didn't even play with the standard unit. I'll put some MP3 on an SD card and thats about it. I've got the gear in my lounge for when I want that.

          • if you don't have any plans for the stereo, and you like your tunes, then $1500 for the dynaudio setup is great "value"
it's still a fair amount of money for alot of people...

for me it's a waste of money, as most of the standard audio is coming out for a much bigger install

dave, yeah, but to each his own, and i would never criticise a person for spending money on an upgrade that was important to them, and i agree with you at home I have the Quad Power and pre Amp, the B &W speakers and Audiloab player.
But For Myself, I didnt hear that much of a difference in teh two setups.

heh, it's also worth noting that the Poms pay $570Aud and Yanks pay $400Aud for their dynaudio upgrades.

that's it Corey, I won't say another word about it!
              promise.

              peace all.

              • No audio upgrade here. I would have looked at upgrading if there was an option for DAB+.

I think I will be too busy listening to the exhaust anyway

I use to have a V8 with a sunroof and used to love cool sunny days when i could hear the sound from above and around.
Will be the same with the R too me thinks.

                  • $1500 is a pretty good deal as far as audio upgrades go, however still wouldn't be as good as aftermarket Dyn's and good amps, but you'd be spending more as well. A 2 way set of Dyns are $1000.

Now that would be a good investment.. I thought I read somewhere this was an option overseas..

I have to say I think all the options are expensive no matter what sales angle is played.. a number should have been standard for the car to differentiate it further from the GTI

Other than having to wait so long for the options we want, I like being able to choose. As is evident here, so many of us choose different items that if they were standard some of us would be paying for things we don't want.

I love doing this too, my MPS was a little quiet but with the roof down the growl was much better, I'm sure the R is going to better again and infinitely more addictive - man it's not long now, I think the wait now is worse than it was 6 months ago!!!

                          • I listened to the Dynaudio and non-dynaudio set ups in the golfs, back to back, and the Dynaudio is clearly the better system by far.

Its definitely no "much of a muchness" type thing the quality difference is there for those who enjoy it.

I used to be into showcar type audio, I used (and loved) Focal Reference speakers which were awesomely warm, at the time, and JL Audio amps and subs. Early soundstream stuff was good too but now there is stuff is a bit naff. Anyway I digress!

I decided on this car (the R) I wouldnt do anything other than maybe just add a 8/10 inch sub, in with the Dynaudio stuff. So for me this upgrade was perfect. Its cheap (relatively), like Corey says - for what you get, that is, what you would have to pay If you were buying it afterwards it not a good price.

On the other hand, If you dont spend much time in your car, or didnt get the DVD player, or arent really interested in audio in a car (like my dad!).. then this isnt worth $5 bucks.

I gotta say, If you guys have $150K Audio set ups at home.. why are you buying a GOLF!!! LMAO Just joking, my position, I bought a BnW Zeppelin thing for a $1K and thought I lost my marbles!!

The reality is that the bitrate of DAB+ would be pretty low on average and the better audio upgrade may be negated. Dont mind the idea of it though.

                              • High voltage tram lines can make lots of noise on AM radio stations. I am only wanting DAB+ as I usually have SEN on in the car
