Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      • I absolutely love my new R and have learned to "overcome" the lag that was not as evident in my MK V GTI, but...... the turning circle is crap. Is it my imagination, or have others noticed it?

The turning circle is a LOT better than my Subaru WRX (MY01... 4 sale).

Do you have 19" wheels? Apparently the turning circle is tighter if you have the 18" wheels. Probably due to the wider tyres on the 19" wheel.

                • That might explain it, I have the stock 18"s and this has been the best turning circle car i have owned in 3 cars (N14 SSS, MY01 WRX)

19s, I know it is a minor thing to complain about given all the fantastic things, but it sure is noticeable over the MKV GTI I had previously

                    • front wheel drive GTI- all wheel drive Golf R.. would probably explain 80% of your turning circle

don't think so - as I understand it the R runs in FWD mode unless AWD is needed, and even then it's only 80:20 or some such.

Im not sure if they were together or not, I assume they were because they were at the same place at the same time coming from the same direction, but the plate on one was personalized and the other was just normal- not that that always means a lot, but maybe the white one was just cruising around and followed the black one? Doesnt really matter I guess- he wanted to be behind the black one XD
He's drives a white Corolla sedan in case he was driving with anyone on this forum.

I was of course joking when I made that remark

                              • I finally got to drive my friend's Golf R, after having driven his R32 and Scirocco R previously. All are factory standard. So no chip ups or mods.

It's quite interesting driving them almost back to back.

And despite them sharing same engines, the Scirocco R and the Golf R actually felt very different.

The Scirocco R had a more brutal acceleration. The Golf R delivered the power more linearly. It was actually closer to the R32 in terms of delivery than I had expected. I suspect it could be because the car is heavier and the 4Motion splits the power up, vs the RocR which only needs to deliver it to the front 2, so it's more immediate.

The engine note on the Golf R was also surprisingly more muted than the RocR inside the cabin. It was about the same levels outside the car, but inside, I never heard the loud burps and gurgles that the RocR did when I was shifting through the gears.

The 4Motion is very surefooted and I never found it putting a step wrong during the time I drove it, albeit not on the track. It just seemed less beastly than the RocR.

If I wanted a blast of fun, I really think the Scirocco R is a lot more suited. But I am not sure if I wanted this on a daily commute. The Golf R is more practical, with oodles of power on tap but doesn't behave like a hoon when doing his job.

But for night drives such as last night, I think the Scirocco R would have been a better choice. I had a bigger grin on my face after that drive.

Next up, his Edition 30 Pirelli.
