Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • To POR15 or not to POR15 is the question

So... The mk3 is getting finished this year thats for sure, however I have thought of por15 the underneath of the car!

I know cars do not rust as they do in America and the UK but I would like to make the car as bullet proof as I can

So the question is can you por15 straight over the underside? Or do you have to cut back all of the undersealer and $hit to put it on?

    Cheers Steve

Por 15 works on bare metal - not worth applying it over body deadener, etc.

Another idea would be to use some Fisholene and go all through the body cavities and chassis holes/gaps, etc.

This dries as hard as a rock, gets into all your cracks ( ) and is a great corrosion preventer.

Works very well on the inside surfaces of your panels, too.

Odour shouldn't be a problem once dry.

There is also another thing that the US and UK guys use which is stone chip? Maybe that would have the affect that I am after, any ideas?

A similar product is Septone's hammer finish - resistant to debris and all that, but to a certain degree of course (the finish won't stay if you scrape subframe, as an example ). I think you can't go wrong with POR15, but as Reef as mentioned, only go for it if you're really stripping the underside to address any other issues. Otherwise, I think it's fine as it was from the factory.

This sums up Stone Chip pretty nicely.

          http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/stonechip.htm

Yeah, as Ray says - the factory underside protection is pretty good. It's designed for salt ravaged euro roads, so it's over spec for Australian conditions.

If you have any nasty scrapes on the underbody you want to patch up, you could sand back those areas with a coarse grit and then apply Por 15 to exposed metal, before going over with body deadener (Septone), for a factory look.

Spend the extra coin (that you would spend on doing this) on getting the car done quicker

You'd be surprised how many MK3's are already rotting, my old GL had to have the RL door and sill repaired due to rust and it was a 98'!!!
