Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Ive got the leather in mine too - but none of it is real leather. You can feel it by how thin it is. Many cars these days dont have real leather, my dads 2008 Subaru Outback for example, my friends 2010 Mazda SP25 etc. Its all "leatherette" fake stuff.

Even BMW largely use the fake leather on all but the top end models. How long has it been since you sat in a car with real leather - like a nice Audi / Merc / Range Rover etc? With 2x family members working at Audi, ive sat in and driven an abundance of hi end Audi's over the past few years. Im talking everything from: RS6, R8's, to A3 and A4's with the leather packages. The seats feel absolutely lush, a completely different feel on your clothes/skin to the Vienna leather seats in the Golf. And the smell of the real leather is completely different.

I know you don't believe me about the fake leather in our Golf's, but if you were to slice open your seat, you would see im right. How many cows do you know have woven white fabric under their skin?

If you pinch and rub the "leather" on the Golf together in your fingers, you can feel its far too thin to be real, as well as the fact you can feel the woven white fabric underneath. Try it this afternoon.

            • Don't know about your seats mate but mine have real leather on the contact points (as I have already mentioned) - seat cushion top and seat upright (that your back sits against)

Rest is leatherette, which I mentioned before

              How do I know ?

              I've had both repaired

                • ^ ill check the seats in my friends 2007 Mk5 GTi when i see him next - but from memory they are they same material as my R. Both our cars have the "Vienna leather" option.

I'll get some photos/evidence of what im talking about from my car over the next day or two.

Can i ask what and/or why you have had to have the seats repaired in a <1yr old car?

                  • Mine was a MKV GTI - contact points were leather (where your body contacts the bottom and upright squabs)

Rest is leatherette. Same for most cars mate and has been the case across makes for years, not just VW

Mine were damaged by keys in pockets

                    • Lets talk about something less contentious, so a pov pack R is better than a fully optioned GTI

Give me a GTI any day over a POV pack R with CF.

True, the GTI, irrespective of colour is a better value proposition than an R.
