What bugs? The car is built on the Mark V platform which has been around since 2004 and proven itself to be reliable. And given the long delays with 6-8 weeks on a ship it's unlikely that any faults that appear in the R would be fixed on cars arriving here in six months time even if engineers in Germany started seeing failures over the next few weeks.

The MkVI 118TSI engine is the same one as the GT/GTSport TSI engine (albiet detuned) and it has been having problems. We won't know what faults exist till we have people putting kays on the cars.


I hear you that is is unlikely that the R is going to suffer issues with the engine and platform, but will all new products it is always best to take a wait and see option before buying - let the early adopters root out the issues first.

It also takes time for the workers at the factory to get accustomed to assembling the car, early examples may not be as well screwed together as latter ones.

Haha, this might normally be the case, but after 3 years+ our GTI is faultless by and large. Every now and then there's a squeak from the dash, but that's happenend no more than 5-6 times over the life of the car. The S3, on the other hand, has minor squeaks/rattles from the passenger door and passenger seat headrest. They're not major by any means, but just enough to be moderately annoying. And certainly moreso than anything in the Mk5.

I was assuming that Audi may have escaped some of the rattles and quirks for paying the extra premium, but I suppose it's luck of the draw, and VW is getting a lot better with their build quality - almost feels like an Audi I guess.

One big plus for the Golf R over the S3 (if these options float your boat) is that you can get a 3dr R with DSG. Last time I looked the S-tronic was only available on the S3 Sportback.

I find the 6spd manual in my S3 really nice to use once you are moving, but on fast launches in particular, I find the change from 1st-2nd really hard to get bang on smooth. No problems there with DSG, of course.

Sounds like you're almost convinced to get DSG next time? That's an obvious advantage of the R if you want a 3DR and DSG. I also find 1st-2nd clunky in most manual gearboxes unless you match the revs perfectly, and does it when you're trying to drive slowly (ie cold starts).

Anyone know what the stock speakers are like in the R. I forgot to test them when I test drove the car, I was to busy drooling. I wanted to get one equipped with the Dynaudio, but unfortunately none of the cars had it.

I would assume that they are the same stock speakers that are in the GTI....in which case, they're decent.

Would be the same as the GTI etc.. 2-ways (1" & 6.5").

Sounds noticably better than the Mk5 3-way audio setup which is a mess with the speaker placement. 2-way in the traditional locations is much more simple and better sounding.

And I'll give another mention to the new R's updated DSG. It feels MUCH better than the DSG that I had in my MKV GTI. So much smoother than they used to be...makes me wonder what changes have been done in the past few years

Saw a Blue and a Silver R today. I was looking forward to seeing the Blue as it's the signature colour and my last two cars have been blue but i have to agree with a few people that have said they were disappointed in it. Definitely doesn't seem as bright and striking as the R32 blue which i really like.
If i do end up getting one i think it will be Candy White for me.

Saw the blue today at Patrick's yard and it looks magnificent - particularly in brilliant sunshine like we generally have in Darwin!! I might be biased as I was looking at MY new car!! Should hopefully be ready by Wednesday or Thursday - the wife will have to pick it up though as I am away from tomorrow till Friday late arvo - damn - still will be good to have it waiting for me!

It maybe just software updates that were done on the MK6 range to make them smoother over the MK5? It would be a safe bet that whichever company makes these gearbox's has not been pumping these out since 2004 with no updates what so ever.

As time goes on they would release newer software and alike to make it perform just that little bit smoother...

Ah yes, however the Blue matches the colour of the needles on the instrument gauge, which when you see them at night will have you thinking about how the Blue exterior matches the rest of the package.

Yes, there has been an update, even over the MK6 GTI. I've seen Volkswagen refer to it as the DSG3 (little superscript 3). They've also made the specific point that they've updated it to reduce (practically remove) the "hesitation on launch" that owners and the car media has complained about since the release of the DSG.

So I'd love to know the specific changes, whether it is just new software, new mechatronics, or some genuine mechnical differences, but yeah, there has definitely been some change introduced in the R.

You of all people would know about that right? e.g. fervently defending the R32 when you owned one (attacking anyone even remotely critical of the R32) and now yourself dissing it now that you no longer own one. And now fervently defending your Mk6 GTI.

When you buy your next car, will you start dissing the Mk6 GTI?
